Rains wreak havoc across Valley | | | Bashir Assad Srinagar, Apr 7 :The incessant rains that lashed the valley for two days left most of the roads and streets water-logged, blocking free movement of the people and vehicles, even as the landslides triggered by heavy rains forced closure of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Even though there was a momentarily hiatus on Monday in some parts of valley but the water-logged streets and roads severely affected the life. The Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service also remained closed on its ninth anniversary due to continuous rains. Meanwhile, Heavy rains led to power blackouts in various parts of Kashmir Valley triggering protests in various parts of the valley. People came out on the streets to protest the shortage of electricity. Agitated people blocked roads in various parts of Kashmir Valley, causing inconvenience to office-goers and students. Water-logging was reported from various areas including the city centre Lal Chowk. Vehicles had to wade through a deluge of rainwater while pedestrians were left at the mercy of God to find way towards their destinations. Meanwhile, Higher reaches in Kashmir Valley including Gulmarg and Pahalgam received fresh snowfall while rains lashed the plains, bringing down temperatures across the Valley. The Srinagar-Jammu highway was closed after it was hit by landslides in many places. The Beacon authorities were pressed into service to restore the traffic. However, the clearance operation was hit by bad weather. The continuous rains are also causing anxiety among the farmers. Rains also delayed the spraying of the first pesticide which is considered very important for preventing the growth of harmful insects. The apple-growers of the valley are particularly concerned about the weather. In Shopian the apple-growers are even more concerned as the production has been below the average in last few years. Meanwhile, Director Meteorological Department, Sonum Lotus, has said that the weather is likely to improve from Tuesday. As per the Met Deptt Srinagar recorded 19.9 mm of rain, Kokernag 19.8 mm, Pahalgam 24.2 mm, Qazigund 17.6 mm and Kupwara 24.5 mm. Incessant rains have surged the water level of Jhelum; but the level hasn't touched a danger mark. |
