High command not enjoying healthy relation with workers | NC fast losing its representative character across Valley | | Shakeel A Khan SRINAGAR, Apr 7: National Conference, once the largest regional party of Jammu and Kashmir, is losing ground very fast since its new crop of leaders don't bother about its grass root level workers. As on date the party seems to be divided on the lines of ideas, old and new. Given the mood of the people, National Conference can never form the Government on its own. The party has realized its weakness and that is why it has shook hands with Congress party to be counted. It is no longer a political party, but a political stunt. "The party is losing the support of its workers thick and fast. The new generation leaders including the CM himself has maintained a distance from the party's grass root level workers" said a group of party workers from Budgam while sharing their views with Early Times. The party insiders said that the party founders enjoyed a healthy relation with the low level party workers. They said in those days National Conference was a wave and not merely a political party. "National Conference has become a property of handful of persons. The party has lost the representative character. A person cannot stick to it in such circumstances. The party is about some persons like Agha Ruhulla only and nobody bothers for the people who fell to bullets for the cause of the party," said Waheed, a youth from Shalteng. Only till yesterday, National Conference used to label the Congress workers as the 'worms of the dirty drain'. Then what has driven them to go for the alliance with the same party, opine some of the party workers from Central Kashmir. "The reality is that the party can never come to power on its own now. They want to be in power by whichever means, by sharing it with the party that comes to power at Centre, against the aspirations of the party workers," said Ghulam Mohammad from Ganderbal. The strength of this party in the coalition Government was tested many times when many things did not get its way. There was row over the 73rd amendment of the Panchayati Raj. It had to face tough times when party wanted to create more administrative units. "Gone are the days when the party used to get two thirds majority in Assembly. The party has paid the price for its wrong doings," said Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Ahangar from Zanigam. Not much before, there was a storm in the Valley as the news about Haji Yousuf's death became a lead in all the dailies. How and why he died is in the knowledge of everybody. But what was shocking, he was labeled as a 'crook' by the party stalwarts after his death. "Haji Saheb was a motivated National Conference worker. He had devoted all his life to the party .He was devoted towards the cause of the party. He deserved a fair deal not the death. Now it is meaningless to serve the party," said Manzoor Ahmad from Nawab Bazar. |
