Heartburns for National Conference workers as Prof Soz shares dais with Farooq Abdullah at Naseem Bagh

SRINAGAR, Apr 7: National Conference workers and activists were taken aback at the mausoleum of the party founder, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah after they saw that their party President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah is sharing stage with Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President, Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz.
Majority of the National Conference workers could not come to terms after they saw the Congress leaders at the Sheikh's mausoleum at Naseem Bagh here. After filing his nomination papers for Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat, Dr. Abdullah visited NC founder's mausoleum and addressed party workers. He shared dais with Prof. Soz at this venue.
"Policies and programmes of National Conference are poles apart from Congress and no similar lines can be drawn in this regard. It is too hard to accept the reality that both are on same page at this point of time. A development like this is likely to cause harm to the party at the ground level more with Assembly elections not far away," said Mohammad Ramzan, a grass-root worker.
The NC workers said that interests of the state can easily be surrendered as and when the party joins hands with a national party like Congress. The workers said that party would have gained if it would fought elections on all the six Parliamentary seats of state instead of extending support to the Congress candidates on three seats.
"The party leaders could have easily fought elections on all seats and once the results would have been known then alliance with Congress could have been thought off, but that was not to be. There are basic workers of National Conference in Jammu and Ladakh regions. Their aspirations have been dashed since Congress is fighting elections from these two regions with the support of National Conference," said the NC workers.
Not long ago, Additional General Secretary, National Conference, Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal had referred to Congress party as an enemy of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Kamaal had in fact taken dig at Prof. Soz on various issues including extension of 73rd and 74th amendments of Panchayati Raj Act to the State Panchayati Act.
How did the heart of NC leaders including of Dr. Kamaal change towards Congress is somewhat difficult to understand. But it has for sure not gone well with the people who are the game changers more so at the time of elections whether Parliamentary or state. The NC workers and activists are quite upset with NC-Cong alliance that according to them has got materialized due to close friendship between Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah and Congress Vice President, Rahul Gandhi.
"The Congress leaders have always exploited the sentiments of people of Jammu and Kashmir more so Kashmir valley. They can never be friends of people over here and one fails to understand how come still the party leaders have joined hands with Congress. This is a question that can only be answered by the party leaders," said National Conference workers.
They termed today's development as a dilution of the party's ideology adding that leaders of a regional party like National Conference cannot rub shoulders with leaders of a national party like Congress.
