Early Times Report

Budgam, Apr 19: Kashmir valley and areas of Pirpanchal and Chinab region in Jammu region witnessed heavy snowfall right from November last year until recently. The heavy snowfall may have a positive impact on agriculture activity in the state as the amount of water level in the rivers , lakes and streams is going to increase this season . The recent snowfall , however, has also added to the hardships of the people as it caused lot of damage to the life and property across various parts of Kashmir as many houses have been totally damaged not only due to heavy snowfall but due to the continuous landslides in many areas of Kashmir valley especially upper reaches of Budgam where dozens of houses have been completely damaged. The affected families are yet to be compensated by the Government and the reason is Model Code of Conduct .
In Frestwar village of Khansahib tehsil of Budgam alone as many as one dozen houses have completely collapsed as the land beneath continues to erode due to accumulation of water and increased water table. The snowfall which occurred recently had plenty of water content and the land in Frestwar village being soft and muddy (karewa land) had a direct impact on the land which started moving in different directions especially in the areas which are located on edges of karewa land.
"Ten houses belonging to Gujjar community in Jingoo Mohalla have completely damaged and till date no alternate accommodation had been provided to them. Even the administration has not provided any tents or blankets to the victims , even the senior district officials haven't visited our village , we haven't been provided money under Indira Awas Yojna (IAY) , the officials say that there is Model Code of Conduct enforced " said a local resident Ghulam Mohammad Lone
"Had the authorities undertaken snow clearance in the area under MNREGA the situation would have not been so bad , it is due to heavy accumulation of snow in the area which lead to such a disaster. Our area has not seen power and water from the last one month and authorities are least bothered , it seems as if we people are cattle " said Abdul Rashid another local resident
