Desperate BJP accepts defeat by leveling rigging allegation
4/19/2014 11:22:16 PM
Kunas Shrivatsa
Jammu, Apr 19: By leveling charges of rigging in higher reaches of Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha Parliamentary constituency, it seems that the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has conceded defeat to its rivals especially Congress as the contradiction in statements of its leadership itself suggests so.
Ever since the final figures came out in the open for all the six districts of the constituency, the BJP is giving an impression that it is perplexed and not sure of its victory despite a record voter turnout in Kathua and Udhampur districts, which are traditional strongholds of the saffron party and where the polling percentage stood at 73.03% and 70.81% respectively.
The other day BJP candidate from Udhampur Lok Sabha seat Dr Jitendra Singh leveled allegations of bogus voting in assembly segments of Doda, Gulabgarh and Inderwal and filed objections in this regard before the Returning Officer of the constituency at Kathua.
On the one hand, Dr Singh alleged mass rigging in the election and said that as he had already lodged a complaint with the Returning Officer indicating apprehensions of irregularities in certain areas but no attention was paid while on the other he exuded confidence that his win is a foregone conclusion.
The political observers maintain that the allegation of rigging by BJP candidate is nothing but negativism and act of desperation.
"The BJP has cut a sorry figure by leveling the allegation. If BJP is so sure of its win from Udhampur Lok Sabha seat then why it is behaving like a loser and making hue and cry of rigging which is a remotest possibility in present times where everything is fair, transparent and crystal clear. Moreover, the Election Commission of India's activism has also ensured that a free and fair polling is being conducted in the length and breadth of the country including the remotest areas of Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat…. After the polling concluded, the Chief Electoral Officer, J&K Umang Narula also declared that election was conducted in a free and fair manner and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the constituency, " said the political analysts.
The political analysts further pointed it is quite baffling that the same party which was upbeat for heavy polling in Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha is now somewhat skeptical in Udhampur-Doda constituency despite massive turnout there.
"BJP is definitely in a state of confusion as its candidate's words are not matching his actions… Generally, it has been observed that a candidate, who is at the receiving end in the elections, level such allegations of rigging in a bid to divert attention while at the same time such antics are being used as a vain attempt to gain sympathy of the people since in the event of a defeat the losing candidate projects himself as a sacrificial lamb," maintained political observers.
The height of contradiction among party leaders could be gauged from the fact that the State BJP Chief's Political Advisor Prof Hari Om Gupta buoyed by the bumper voting in Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat also predicted a BJP win.
However, it looks like the heavy voting in Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar and Reasi districts which are pocket boroughs of Congress has left the BJP camp in a jittery.
Meanwhile, B S Slathia, Election Agent of Congress Candidate from Doda-Udhampur Constituency Ghulam Nabi Azad, today lambasted the BJP for raising the issue of rigging in higher reaches of the constituency.
While acknowledging and appreciating the sincere efforts of Election Commission of India (ECI) in creating awareness amongst the voters to cast their votes, which resulted in high percentage of polling not just here in J&K but all across the country, Slathia said that BJP is intentionally raking up the rigging issue as the party failed to accomplish its divisive politics.
Slathia, while terming the allegations of BJP as shocking said, "Instead of appreciating the role of Election Commission for holding fair and free elections, the BJP has intentionally raised the bogey of rigging the elections probably anticipating its defeat."
He further said that the BJP candidate raised the issue of rigging the election in high reaches of erstwhile district Doda from where he belongs.
"It was a futile attempt of the BJP candidate to divert the attention of the people for his failure to mobilize public opinion to cast vote in his favour during the election campaign," said Slathia.
Slathia questioned that when there has been high percentage throughout the country, why BJP's nominee is offended by the people living in remote and higher reaches casting their votes. "Don't they have right to vote? Is there any bar from the Election Commission not to come out of houses, even if there is cloudy atmosphere or little rain?," said Slathia adding that "Why BJP has no doubts in those areas wherever it is hopeful of seeking good number of votes and why BJP is suspecting foul play from those areas where it has been given befitting reply from secular forces?"
