Like 2009, Ladakh again poised for close contest in 2014 Lok Sabha elections

JAMMU, Apr 19: With the decision of the ex-MLA Ghulam Raza to join the electoral fray, Parliament election in the cold desert of Ladakh has taken interesting turn. Islamia School Kargil candidate Aga Sayed Kazim had already filed his nomination papers on Friday.
Ghulam Raza, who is district president of Congress of Kargil, has decided to contest election as rebel candidate against official party candidate, Tsering Samphel.
Two power Shia leaders have filed their papers from Ladakh Lok Sabha segments as independent candidate. Similarly two prominent Buddhist leader Thupstang Chewang as BJP candidate and Tsering Samphel as Congress nominee have already filed their papers from this prestigious seat. Two candidates Anayat Ali and Mohammad Amin have also filed their nomination papers for Ladakh seat on Friday. Now six candidates are in fray for the Ladakh seat which has 159949 votes. Although Ladakh one of the biggest Lok Sabha segment in the country, it has very few voters.
With six candidates have filed their papers, election in this region has become interesting. In 2009 Lok Sabha elections similar situation was emerged and proxy candidate of National Conference Hassan Khan had won election in the four corner contests, although by a narrow margin. In 2009 Parliamentary elections out of 107996 polled votes, Hassan Khan had got 32701 votes and another independent candidate Asgar Ali Karbalaie who had received 24498 votes. Congress candidate Phuntson Namgyal had got 29017 votes and Thinless Angmo received 22717 votes. Last time there was five candidates but this time so far six candidates have filed their papers.
Leh, Nobra, Kargil and Zanskar are the four Assembly segments which fall under Ladakh Parliamentary segment. This mountainous belt is divided between two regions of Kargil and Leh. While as Kargil is dominated by Shias and Leh is dominated by Buddhists.
