| Declare May Day as gazetted holiday: NMC | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 19: President of the National Mazdoor Conference (NMC) Subash Shastri today appealed to the Prime Minister to declare "May Day" as gazetted holiday in the country under the negotiable instruments act as a tribute to martyrs and recognition of working class contribution to the development of the country.Addressing a well attended rally of NMC activists at Utter-Behani, Shastri said because of the May Day martyrs, the working class got their rights throughout the world adding that India being one of the largest democracy in the world and frontline welfare state should also declare May 1, as National holiday. He said that during the V.P. Singh regime it was decided to declare May day as a National holiday, but due to some unknown factors the decision could not be implemented till date. He expressed hope that Dr.Manmohan Singh will take an early decision in this regard. Pleading the cause of State Govt. employees and pensioners, Shastri demanded early release of 10 % DA and 4th installment of 6th pay commission arrears in favor employees of the State Govt. and pensioners to provide financial relief to the Salaried class in view of steep price in essential commodities and hoped decision would be taken by the State Govt. well before May day as a good will gesture |
