Early Times Report

Jammu, June 6: How the human psyche goes beyond human control when it comes to clinching success in life by any mean was the central core theme of the play "Cactus" which was performed by Shivani Cultural Society at K L Saigal Hall to the jam packed audience.
Taking its mythical origin in the year 1956, when medical science was not advanced upto matching of DNAs to establish rapes, the play signified the most horrid attempt by a human being to castrate him to escape the wrath and make it a stepping stone to his successful career ahead.
Dr Raj Oberoi rises to unprecedented heights of success through a professional gimmick of castration done upon himself when he finds his beloved bearing a child in her womb and likely to create trouble.
Sheetal, his wife, ignorant of the fact persuades him to file a divorce as she thinks herself to be barren unable to bear a child.
Raj, knowingly that divorce may lead to the truth coming out in open does all means to save the situation until a stranger in Deepak Agnihotri shows in and slowly and gradually the truth unveils that leads to a hell breaking loose upon Raj Oberoi.
The climax of the play however goes anti climax as after being pursued by his inner conscious to take up suicide as glorified way to end the system, Raj opening up to a new front of truth ----that until life remains, we need to live in all circumstances ------is the gist that sends spine chilling shiver.
The play was held under the grants scheme of Sangeet Natak Akademi.
New finds in Pammy Samyal as Sheetal made an emphatic presence of her acting prowess that beat the doubts of her being fresher and unknown to theatrics. Her clinic moves ably supported byb her dialogues gave her an impetus of a matured actress.
Manpreet Kour as Mrs Taneja too was a surprise package of acting gift to SCS as her modulated dialogues left lasting impressions on the audience.
Aaditya Bhanu who adapted and tailored the original script took the main lead and reins of the play and through his histrionics left an indelible mark of a great actor.
The showing in of a stranger in Himanshu Darshan as Deepak Agnihotri took the play's morale into cloud nine as the thespian of dramaturgy and numero uno actor of the state was simply best as usual he is always.
The chief guest Balwant Thakur, Regional Director ICCR while speaking on the occasion appreciating the role of Shivani Cultural Society in state said that it is the premier society that has been religiously doing theatre since last three decades and is instrumental in bringing serious issues to the fore through theatre. He was all praise for the group and actors for having delivered a novel theme through a strong presentation.
