Multi-sports arena still draped in vague assurances | Swimming pool awaits roadblocks, completion | | Shiv Thakur JAMMU, June 6: Established in 1966, the only multipurpose sports arena Maulana Azad (M.A) Stadium is all set to get a face-lift but delayed finished outlook is causing concerns reasons better known to authorities at helms of affairs but is taking tolls of regular sports activities these days. After more than 45 years, the State Sports Council finally woke up from deep slumber as a massive renovation work in M.A stadium is going on at a war footing these days. According a sports analyst, it's been more than 4 years since work to repair and renovate the only existing swimming pool at Maulana Azad (MA) Stadium was taken up but the work still continues to be at infancy stage. The much awaited swimming pool constructed at the cost of Rs 2 crores is still out of bounds for the aspiring swimmers and water sports lovers of the city, he added. Shweta Malhotra, parent of a swimmer shared her views with Early Times saying, as the renovation work of the lone swimming pool at M A Stadium get further delayed swimming enthusiasts were left stranded for years despite getting admission in the stadium for swimming practice and the authorities are not taking keen interest either in the renovation of the pool or arranging adequate practice sessions and the swimmers are likely to miss their seasonal session this year too as the under renovation, swimming pool is not ready for activities. "The swimming pool, which was closed in the beginning of 2010 for the renovation purpose, is not yet ready for handing over to the authorities", she added. She also said that, 'previously also, the swimmers from Jammu region could not continue their routine practice and missed participation at various national levels. Contractor appointed for the renovation when contacted said, "We are ready with our work and delay is on the part of sports authorities only. Changing room as well as wash rooms is still to get renovated and we were authorized to renovate pool area only". Sports officer Rajan Sharma, however, had his own point to prove regarding the infrastructure development of the swimming pool. He said, "since the filtration plant to be operational to make it a worthy swimming plant, we cannot put to risk the lives of the children to any danger taking plunge into dirty waters," he said adding that construction of the changing room is no big deal as it can be constructed though the funds available with the department. He, however, admitted the laxity contributing the onus on non availability of the funds earlier and also stressed that since approach road is not commuting worthy, the whole plant was held in abeyance . He assured quick take up of the project to make it viable soon. |
