Omar still unaware of causes responsible for LS defeat
NC is doomed?
6/11/2014 11:46:16 PM
Rustam
jammu, June 11: It was 25 days ago that the Election Commission of India announced the Lok Sabha election results. The BJP and NDA were the clear winners and the Congress-led UPA and other "secular" outfits came out of the exercise minus everything. The electorate rejected outrightly almost all the "secular" parties and formations like the Congress-led UPA of which the NC was, and continues to be, a part. The NC, like the BSP, DMK, RLD and so on, got completely decimated. It failed to open its account even in the Kashmir valley considered to be its constituency.
Ironically, the NC leadership is still unaware of the causes which resulted in its debacle. 25 days is not a small period for analyzing the causes of defeat and reaching a definite conclusion, but Omar Abdullah, who besides being the Chief Minister is also the working president of the party, continues to underscore the need to analyze the factors responsible for the debacle in the Lok Sabha election. As late as on June 10 he said the party needs to analyze factors behind the defeat and take corrective measures to meet the challenges facing the party and bounce back. "History is witness to the conspiracies hatched against the NC through false propaganda and machinations time and again…You have witnessed flocking of all anti-NC forces in the past to dislodge its strong political base and popularity in the state, but you have also witnessed the determination and bravery of the workers of this party to steer the ship out of all troubles defeating the disgruntled and vested interests," he was quoted as saying while addressing office-bearers of the party in separate meetings held at Khag, Beerwah and Magam. "We should ponder over the reasons behind our defeat and take corrective measures to bounce back," Omar Abdullah also said.
The defeat the NC suffered has rattled the party leadership and the defeat of the party patriarch and former Chief Minister and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah has sent shock waves among the party workers. It's only natural. A commentator was right when he ridiculed Omar Abdullah, saying that "the Chief Minister appeared quite naive when after the results he firstly invited people to his twitter to bring their grievances to his notice" and "then he informed the public that the gates of his Gupkar residence were open and anybody could approach him". The said commentator, who used to be very close to the Abdullahs, was also right when he further said that "these responses reminded us of the response of French Queen mother on huge demonstrations during French revolution that 'if these people don't have bread why don't they eat cake'? Omar might have realized that the 'access to twitter' was the privilege of chosen few". The commentator hit the nail on the head when he said: "It is universally recognized that the ruling party goes to people with its report card during the election campaigns seeking the re-election to again form the Government. The problem with the ruling party rather than ruling parties was that they did not present any report card before the people. Moreover, the campaigning was left to few seniors who were expected to perform miracles. However, they failed to perform the one".
Indeed, Omar Abdullah didn't go to the people with a report card. In fact, he had nothing to show to the people as he and his Government had failed to deliver on any front. He knew it fully well and that's reason he made Narendra Modi and the BJP his election planks perhaps convinced that anti-Modi and anti-BJP campaign or negative campaign against them might help him improve the poll prospects of his party. But it was not to be. Instead, his negative campaigning boomeranged and all the three party candidates were rejected by the Kashmiri electorate. Omar Abdullah and members of his kitchen Cabinet must recognize the fact that people want governance and development and not rhetoric. Neither insistence on Article 370 nor insistence on greater autonomy or divisive politics will help the NC bounce back. If it really wishes to remain somewhat relevant in Kashmir valley, it has to take recourse to positive politics and concentrate on issues of public import.
