Drug abuse on rise in Baramulla | | | Syed Tahir Bukhari BARAMULLA, July 11 : The drug addiction among the youth is on rise, parents are in a state of 'Melancholy' but administration is least bothered about the crime which are taking place in day in and day out in Flood Colony of Khowjabagh in north Kashmir's Baramulla district. Drugs often make addicts its slaves by trapping the upcoming generation especially teenagers and youth. Jammu and Kashmir is not far from its tight grip of addiction among children and adolescents higher than any other group. According to local residents of Usman Abad, Flood Colony Khowjabagh Baramulla, narcotics and other drugs were readily available in the district and the youngsters aged between 12 to 19 years were seen buying them without any inhibition. "It is worthwhile to mention here that easy availability of drugs in respective areas; Like Flood Colony where smuggling of drugs like cannabis, opium, and heroine is taking place in the evening time, even brown sugar from across the border is of course a worrisome issue and has to be tackled on very urgent basis, locals said. A group of youth accused district police of Baramulla and said that "Drugs go by different names on the street than their actual name in order to make communication confidential between the teens and a dealer for which police has given them a liberty, adding that District police has never put their men in civil dresses to check the menace in the area. The street name of drugs can help us whether our teen is using drugs or not. The common street name of drugs are Rani Key Gali, Ajmeeri Gate, Drum, Sunshine, Hati walla, Apna Thikana, Rowdies site and so on. Dr Mohammad Altaf a well known sociologist reveals that "45 per cent of youth between 11 to 19 years of age have taken to drugs, adding that in 2005, 260,000 deaths were reported worldwide due to drug abuse alcohol claimed 3.23 million lives, while tobacco touches 6.2 million deaths globally during the same period" Availability of pharmaceuticals across the counter has added fuel to the fire in serious rise of addiction, which needs to be checked, Sociologist said. Pertinently, there are 37,385 unemployed educated youth in Baramulla, moreover a random survey was carried out by a local NGO revealed that 31 percent of the population between 17 to 47 years confined to certain localities, is involved in drug abuse and trafficking. A doctor in anonymity said, "A survey conducted recently found that the most of the adolescents hooked to drug addiction are getting involved in other crimes like thefts, Rape, burglary, begging, gambling and even though murdering. The government, NGOs, Media, civil society, responsible citizens, volunteers, and religious clerics have a responsible role to play in eradicating this demon from our society. Otherwise the day is not far when we will cry on our future generation. |
