Facing revolt; NC, Congress delay distribution of mandates for Assembly elections | NC old guards unhappy with Omar's performance | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, July 11: Despite facing drubbing in the just concluded Parliamentary elections coalition partners Congress and National Conference seem to be in crossroads as far as distribution of mandates for the upcoming Assembly elections are concerned. The leadership seems to be at loss as whom to select and whom to drop. The delay in announcement regarding the mandate is giving an impression that all is not well with these parties and there is a revolt among the party cadre. The party leadership in both these parties is trying to iron out differences before the announcement of party candidates is made in public. Sources in National Conference said that grassroot workers want party President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah to take complete control of the party matters. These people are completely dissatisfied with the performance of Omar Abdullah as the working President of the party and don't want senior Abdullah to repeat the 'mistake'. "Immediately after facing defeat in the Parliamentary elections Omar was very keen to meet people at his Gupkar residence. This bubble bubbled for few days and later on it burst. The Chief Minister has gone back to square one position as he is in complete disconnect with the party workers and activists," said sources. Sources said that one cannot rule out the role of money in distribution of mandate for the Assembly elections as far as National Conference is concerned. They said that this happened in 2008 Assembly elections and it is all set to be repeated for this year's Assembly elections. "There are chances that some of the Assembly segments where the number of probable candidates is more than one bidding will take place. One who offers the highest bid would get the nod and as such would be given the mandate for the Assembly elections. This does not go well with the grassroot workers who are generally poor and cannot afford money," said sources. Given the situation that Dr. Abdullah has remained aloof from the party activities over the past few weeks it is quite possible he may not show seriousness in 'revival' of the party. As such it is quite possible that Omar and his coterie may call the shots once again much to the discomfort of the old guards of the party. Barring a handful of legislators or Ministers not many MLAs of National Conference are visiting their respective constituencies. They have lost track of the things and are quite way from the problems being faced by the people in their constituencies. On the other hand people have lost faith in them and they want to go for a change this time around. The situation on the ground suggests that National Conference may lose some of the seats including key seats in the Central Kashmir districts of Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal. Its position is very weak in South Kashmir and in North Kashmir it is up against great challenge of People’s Democratic Party, Congress and others. |
