Early Times Report

Srinagar, July13; Though normal life was disrupted in Kashmir Valley due to the strike called by separatist groups on martyrs day today, famous Sunday market in the civil lines was open today.
The Srinagar city was presenting a unique picture today when on one side shops and business establishments in most parts were closed and public transport was off the roads as a result of strike call to remember the martyrs of 1931, the famous Sunday market just few hundred yards from the Lal Chowk remained open for the day. The market which normally attracts thousands of customers witnessed comparatively a less number of people today, two Sunday before the Eid-ul-Fitr festival.
In the morning only few vendors had put up their stalls at Polo Ground. However, as the day progressed, other vendors mostly from uptown and civil lines also put up their stalls in the market which spread from Radio Kashmir, Srinagar, crossing to Hari Singh High Street (HSHS).
The vendors said only those who have their own transport are visiting the market today as public transport remained off the roads. A good number of civil secretariat employees from Jammu region were also seen with their families in the market. They said people from all parts of the Kashmir valley are visiting the market, where from a simple needle to carpets are being sold every Sunday.
The weekly flea market which usually occupies the footpath from Radio crossing to Hari Singh high Street, was restricted to the Poloview area today as elaborate security arrangement were put in place and Police nakas were seen in Lal Chowk area of the commercial hub of Srinagar city.
However, in other parts of the Srinagar city a complete shutdown was observed today and normal life remained suspended due to strike.
Though private cars, cabs and auto-rickshaws were seen plying in civil lines of the city and across major towns of the Valley, the public transport remained off the roads and all the business establishment were shut. The separatists called for a general strike and had planned a march to Naqashband Sahib Shrine, where the martyrs of 1931 were laid to rest.
The effect of the strike was accentuated by the restrictions imposed by the authorities in interior parts of Srinagar city. Restrictions were imposed on the movement of public and transport in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of five police stations in downtown Srinagar in an apparent attempt to foil the separatist rallies.
Restrictions were imposed in the jurisdiction of Police Stations of Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhatta, Safakadal and Maharaj Gunj for maintaining law and order, peace and tranquilly in the city, an official spokesman said.
