SRINAGAR, July 21: The announcement of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah that his father Dr. Farooq Abdullah is not going to contest the upcoming Assembly elections has put the top leadership of National Conference in a quandary.
Omar who is the working president of National Conference had on Sunday said that due to failing health Dr. Farooq would not be able to contest the Assembly elections slated to be held few months later. This virtually means that senior Abdullah would call it a day as far as electoral politics is concerned.
National Conference leaders these days are quite worried over the distribution of mandate since it has published just one list of the candidates for the Assembly elections. Finding suitable candidates for the constituencies is a tricky question and the party leaders are trying to answer this question.
In the Srinagar district the party has yet to take decision on three important seats. This is despite the fact that the party leaders have always maintained that summer capital is a bastion of the party. This time around there would be no cake walk for the party legislators and there are chances that a surprise or two might spring up.
The party has yet to decide who would contest from the three seats of Sonwar, Zadibal and Hazratbal. The sitting legislators of these constituencies have failed miserably and it is quite likely that they might be replaced. The people of these constituencies are up in arms against Mohammad Yasin Shah, Peer Afaq Ahmad and Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal, the sitting legislators of these constituencies.
In the Sonwar constituency it is quite likely that Yasin Shah might be replaced by party working president and Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah. Since Omar would think twice of repeating his luck from Ganderbal it is likely that Sonwar might provide him an alternative. But given the recent mandate in this Assembly segment in the Parliamentary elections it won't be too easy for Omar to take a plunge from this Assembly seat.
In the Zadibal constituency it is more than likely that sitting legislator would be replaced. But who would be the replacement is yet to be known. The odds seem to be favouring Omar's political secretary, Tanvir Sadiq. Some of the reports suggest that Tanvir has in fact threatened to resign from the party if he is not given the mandate from the Zadibal constituency.
From the Hazratbal constituency it is quite likely that veteran National Conference leader, Mohammad Sayeed Akhoon would make a political comeback. Akhoon would replace Dr. Kamaal who has failed miserably as the MLA of the Hazratbal constituency. The sitting legislator may be asked to revert to Gulmarg Assembly segment where he has been elected in the past.
The party leadership seems to be trying their best to motivate all the workers and leaders before making a final call on the distribution of mandates for these Assembly seats along with the other Assembly segments. It remains to be seen who gets the nod and from where.
