Ishant's 7/74 helps India to huge win at Lord's | | | London, July 21: Ishant Sharma produced an excellent spell of short-pitched bowling to turn the second Test on its head during the afternoon session today, thus sparking India to a 95-run win and with it a 1-0 series lead at Lord's. From 198 for 5, England came undone in a series of reckless cross-batted shots to lose their last five wickets for 25 runs, extending their winless streak to a tenth Test. Joe Root (66), Matt Prior (12), Ben Stokes (0) were all guilty of poor shot selection as Sharma picked up his sixth five-for in Tests. With the wicket of Stuart Broad - another victim of short-pitched bowling as he nicked one off his ribcage to MS Dhoni down the leg side - the lanky Sharma (7 for 74) also registered his best bowling figures in Tests. It was also his third five-for this year, the previous two having come earlier this year in New Zealand. Ravindra Jadeja then ran out James Anderson with a direct throw to seal India's first overseas Test win in over three years. However, the wicket that opened the floodgates for the tourists was that of Moeen Ali off the last ball of the first session. Ali and Root had added 99 run when Sharma got one ball to kick up and Ali awkwardly fended it off to Cheteshwar Pujara at short leg. Root and Ali defied the Indian bowlers for the most part of the opening session. England resumed the day on 105 for 4 with India in the driver's seat but the duo's doggedness frustrated the tourist bowlers, giving plenty of hope to the home side . Root completed his fifth fifty in style, hitting Sharma for three fours in an over. Dhoni used Jadeja, Shikhar Dhawan, Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami in the session. Jadeja bowled into the rough outside the right-hander's leg stump for the most part of his spell and despite several jumping balls he couldn't get the better of the batsmen. Just when it looked like England will go into the break in a solid position, Sharma's removal of Ali changed the complexion of the match. It was India's first win in 28 years at the historic Lord's. The third match of the series starts at Southampton on July 27. |
