Srinagar, Aug 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi declaring to work for the welfare of migrant Kashmiri Pandits, refugees from West Pakistan and kin of those killed in militant violence can change the destiny of more than 25 lakh people in Jammu and Kashmir who are living as strangers in their own land.
"See the condition of Jammu and Kashmir where 20 per cent of the population is displaced. We want to settle these displaced people and give them an opportunity of their livelihood," Prime Minsiter Modi had said while addressing a gathering at Kargil on Tuesday. According to the statistics the total population of Jammu and Kashmir is around one crore twenty five lakhs, which comprises seventy five lakh Muslims and fifty lakh non-Muslims.
Talking to Early Times an analyst said: "If Prime Minister Narendra Modi succeeds in giving citizenship rights to West Pakistan refugees and others it will solve the problems of nearly twenty five lakh people, most of them non-Muslims."
If Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) implements its promise of giving citizenship rights to West Pakistan refugees and others it would end the uncertainty and stigma associated with the lives of more than 25 lakh people. "This step will also pave the way for Jammu and Kashmir to have equal number of Hindus and Muslims. It will integrate Jammu and Kashmir with India fully," said a BJP leader from Kashmir.
He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it clear that he believes in equitable development and justice to all. "BJP's slogan and ideology is clear that we want to end the discrimination and all the citizens should have right to live a dignified life," he added.
The General Secretary of the Jammu unit of the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) Bali Baghat while talking to Early Times said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a straight forward man what he says, he means it. He doesn't believe in rhetoric."
Baghat said that all the regimes have ignored the refugees from Western Pakistan and other areas for the past 66-years. "No one has shown any concern towards them as they are not a vote bank of any party. It is unfortunate that no one, except BJP, till date has raised their issue.
They living as refugees for the past 66-years in Jammu and Kashmir is a human tragedy. It is sheer injustice with them. We are committed to their rehabilitation and settlement."
Baghat reiterated that BJP wants people to hold a debate over the benefits and disadvantages of the Article 370 in the state. "Till date whoever has come in power in Jammu and Kashmir has exploited the majority community by claiming that JK enjoys special status due to Article 370. We challenge them to list just 10 benefits of the Article 370. If they succeed in doing so we will support them. Let them otherwise give us a chance we will list 50 disadvantages of the Article 370," Baghat added.
