2 cops, driver killed in militant attack at Galander-Pampore
Second attack in less than 48 hours

SRINAGAR, Aug 13: A civilian and two cops got killed as militants carried out second attack in less than 48 hours in the Pampore area in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. The area has been cordoned off in order to flush out the militants who carried out the attack.
Sources told Early Times that at about 7:45 PM militants attacked a police party in the Galander area in Pampore on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. The militants fired shots towards the gypsy in which the policemen were travelling. The fire was returned but the militants managed to flee taking the cover of darkness.
“Militants opened random fire upon a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) minutes after he came out of his official vehicle (JKO2AN-7032) to attend nature’s call in the area. While the officer identified as Abdul Hameed of IRP 11th BN escaped unhurt, two of his security guards and a bystander were injured in the surprise attack,” said sources.
The civilian a driver by profession got killed during the exchange of fire between the two sides. He has been identified as Manzoor Ahmad Qasab son of Ali Mohammad Qasab resident of Awantipora. Manzoor was driving the Tata Sumo and he faced the impact of attack that took place in absolute darkness. He succumbed to injuries on way to the hospital. The two policemen identified as Mohammad Yaqoob of Chawalgam, Kulgam and Mehraj-ud-din, both of IRP 11th BN died shortly after their arrival at the SMHS hospital, Srinagar. It is said that the police team was returning to battalion headquarters in Shopian district after performing duty at Ladakh on Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s visit.
Soon after the attack, contingents of Special Operations Group (SOG) of police, army and CRPF arrived in the area and started a search operation for the militants. This evening’s attack comes almost 48 hours after the militant attack on a BSF convoy in Kadlabal area of Pampore that led to injuries to at least seven BSF men on Monday night. Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed responsibility of the attack.
A police spokesman said that this evening militants fired upon a police vehicle at Galander in the jurisdiction of Police Station Pampore. Two police personnel and a civilian got injured. All the injured were shifted to hospital for treatment. The civilian and a policeman have succumbed to the injuries. The area has been cordoned off and search of the area has started.
