PM skips important UT issue during Ladakh tour: Cong on offense to corner BJP
8/13/2014 10:59:34 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 13: Prime Minister, Narendra Modi during his visit to Ladakh has given a clear message to Pakistan as well as separatist leadership of Kashmir valley but he has not touched important issues relating to Ladakh in general and Leh in particular.
Prime Minister has not mentioned even a single word in support of Union Territory (UT) demand of the Ladakh people. Residents of Ladakh were expecting that Prime Minister would definitely announce something regarding their demand of UT but they were disappointed when nothing has been mentioned regarding that demand. It is still a question why Prime Minister has avoided speaking on UT status.
The BJP has been vociferously supporting the demand of UT status. Even during Parliamentary elections, BJP had openly supported the demand of granting UT status to Ladakh.
As Prime Minister has not mentioned anything about UT during his address at Kargil and Leh, this has provided an opportunity to the demoralized Congress to corner BJP on this issue.
People of Ladakh were expecting that Narendra Modi would announce some package for Ladakh and also make some announcement regarding the long pending demands of the people of Ladakh including declaring Ladakh as a UT.
On social networking sites, Congress leaders from Leh have started a campaign to dub Narendra Modi's tour as failure.
"The people of Ladakh are highly disappointed on the visit of Narendra Modi Hon'ble Prime Minister of India to Leh as he made no mention of any commitment that BJP had made during the Lok Sabha election for Ladakh region. Except for the inauguration of the ongoing Leh-Kargil-Srinagar Power grid transmission line and dedication of the already completed Nimo-Basgo-Alchi Power Project (during UPA regime) to the nation, the Prime Minister made no mention of the burning issues promised in the BJP's election manifesto which includes UT status with legislature for Ladakh, opening of Kaliash Mansarover for Pilgrimage and trade, inclusion of Bhoti language in the 8th schedule of the constitution of India, Deemed University Status to Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (CIBS) and early completion of the ongoing process of tunnelling Khardongla. In the case of UT for Ladakh, Shri Nitin Gadkari, the Hon'ble Union Minister for Road and Transport and BJP's senior leader had announced at Leh Pologround in the month of May that UT for Ladakh will become a reality within six months. None of these issues were touched by the Prime Minister.
It has now become clear that BJP uses these issues to woo the voters only during the elections. Otherwise from whom can we expect to address our grievances than the Prime Minister of the Country? The PM came to Ladakh empty handed!", Congress campaign on social networking sites stated.
