8/13/2014 10:58:37 PM

Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 13: Police have identified the car hijackers and will soon be arrested while the vehicle has been recovered from the Shopian area of Kashmir.
"Swift Desire vehicle PB35T-4434 which was snatched by some unknown persons from Ramban district in the intervening night of August 11 and 12 has been recovered from Imam Sahib area of Shopian Kashmir," police spokesman here said.
He said that the persons behind the act have been identified and are known as car lifters.
"They are likely to be arrested soon," he added.
A Punjab number car was allegedly hijacked by a group of suspected persons on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in hilly Ramban.
However, alert was also sounded on the highway as well as across the state.
The panic prevailed here and the red alert was sounded in J&K since the hijacking of a Srinagar bound taxi (PB-35P-4434) from the NH44 in the wee hours near Karol (Jaiswal) bridge in Ramban yesterday (Tuesday).
The threat by the hijackers to the driver before taking away the car that they are taking it for blasting it, had panicked one and all and kept the state police on tenter hooks .
"High alert was sounded in the state and nakas from Lakhanpur to Srinagar was tightened as the threat of the hijackers to the driver that they are taking it away to blast it, was being viewed seriously. The police and the security forces were already alert in the entire state in view of Independence Day. The matter was being viewed from the angle of robbery as well as militancy .
"But given the circumstantial evidence it appeared all the more to be a case of car robbery as such cases of vehicle robberies have occurred in past also here and the Punjabi boys seem to be car thieves and the Jammu boys, the gangsters," said DIG, Doda, Ramban, Kishtwar Police Range, Ashqoor Ahmed Wani.
However, he denied that the hijackers were carrying any weapon or the driver was gagged.
According to the reliable sources, the cops of CRPF 84 Battalion's Road Opening Party had found the owner of a taxi (Maruti-Swift DZire) identified as Karamveer of Pathankot, gagged (with a cloth) and tied with a rope to a roadside tree at a secluded place near Karol bridge around 8 in the morning of Tuesday.
According to the Police sources, the taxi reportedly was hired by two unidentified Punjabi speaking persons for the Srinagar trip on the cash payment of Rs. 5,000 to the driver at Pathankot around 6 in the evening of Monday. On reaching Jammu two more unidentified Kashmiri speaking persons reportedly acquainted with the duo had boarded it from KC Chowk, Jammu around 8.30 on Monday night.
The carjackers had allegedly driven away the taxi towards Srinagar after decamping with his cellphone and Driving Licence at 1.30 am on Tuesday at a pistol point and told him that they are taking it to blow it away. The driver had used Rs. 3,000 for filling petrol in the car and had paid Rs. 1,000 to someone and was left with only Rs. 1,000 which was not looted.
