Omar will join BJP-led NDA?

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Aug 13: Had working president of the ruling National Conference, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, thinking in terms of joining the BJP-led NDA or shaking hands with the BJP? If one goes by his own August 11 Srinagar unambiguous statement, then the answer would be clearly yes. On Monday, Omar Abdullah ruled out any tie-up with BJP and said he would not even shake hands with its leaders. "Recently, the BJP (national) president (Amit Shah) made comments about Jammu & Kashmir, my party (National Conference) and even my family. I perhaps would not even shake hands with BJP from a distance," he told reporters on the sidelines of a function. Had Omar Abdullah stopped just there, people would have believed him. But he didn't stop there. He went to explain why he would not shake hands with the BJP leaders or seek a tie up with the BJP. He said "BJP leaders have not said anything that would make him rethink on a possible alliance with the party ruling at the Centre".
"I don't think the BJP has said anything like that which would make us tie up with them," he, to be more precise, said. His statement was so unambiguous which would make even a naïve to conclude that he was not averse to the idea of joining the NDA, but it was a certain statement of Amit Shah that made him think otherwise.
During his presidential address at the BJP's national council in Delhi on August 9, Amit Shah had described J&K as the most corrupt state in the country, lambasted the NC and its leadership and held two families responsible for all the troubles in Kashmir, including disconnect between the government and the people. Besides, he had vowed to end the dynastic rule in the state. According to the statement of Omar Abdullah himself, these were the remarks which made him re-think on a possible tie up with the BJP.
Even today, the possibility of the NC joining the BJP-led NDA-in-power at the centre cannot be completely overruled. After all, the NC had worked with the BJP for more than two years and shared power with it at the centre. It didn't come out of the Vajpayee government even after it rejected the NC's atrocious and divisive autonomy committee report. Those were the days when the NC was very strong, as it had 57 members in the legislative assembly. Its position at present is quite untenable. It has lost Kashmir to the PDP and it has hardly any taker in Jammu and Ladakh. Thanks to its divisive policies and rabidly anti-Jammu and anti-Ladakh attitude and its utter failure to deliver even in Kashmir, which used to be its core constituency. Besides, its relations with the Congress are also far from normal. Considering the prevailing political environment in the state, it would not be surprising if someone says that the defeated, desperate and frustrated Abdullahs could shake hands with the BJP leaders. In fact, Omar Abdullah's own statement shows that he would not mind a tie up with the BJP provided the latter gives him some assurances. It's a pity? The PDP leadership, whose popularity is on the rise in Kashmir Valley, must be enjoying the flip flops of Omar Abdullah.
