India to become self-reliant in defence manufacturing | | | That Narendra Modi is keen to build peace for ensuring greater development has become evident from his address to troops in Leh on Tuesday. While writing in the visitor's book, during his interaction with troops, Indian Prime Minister has said that peace and security are a pre-requisite for development. And during his maiden visit to Ladakh as Prime Minister Modi did not hide his anger and anguish over continued ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops and over the lingering problem having been created by Pakistan sponsored proxy war. Raising his voice he came out strongly against Pakistan for continuing its proxy war of terrorism against India, saying it has lost the strength to fight a conventional war. Yes, one need not feel intrigued and surprised over the way Modi opened his mind against 25-year long proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir. He said that this proxy war has inflicted heavier casualities and injuries to troops than in regular wars. In fact a fleeting reference to the proxy war and ceasefire violations was meant to convey, in a dignified manner, to Pakistan that it should ensure end to the proxy war.He is right when he told Indian troops that terrorism has assumed alarming proportion which calls upon all peace loving and humanitarian forces to unite against terrorism. Though the main purpose of Modi was to inaugurate the Leh-Srinagar power transmission lines the Prime Minister spent time with troops in a bid to act as their morale booster. He promised the troops that a National War Memorial would be built that would inspire future generations of India. He also told the defence personnel that the government is committed to making India self-reliant in defence manufacturing. In this connection the BJP led NDA Government has initiated measures for finalizing agreements with USA and other developed countries under which units for manufacturing highly sophisticated weapons and gadgets. The BJP led Government has decided not to bank on imports for upgrading security agencies, especially the Armed forces, with high grade weapons, missiles, fighter planes, radars. Instead India is to seek collaboration from various countries, especially from the US and Russia, for achieving self-reliance in defence manufactuiring. New Delhi believes, that too rightly, dependence on heavy import of military hardware may weaken Indian's policy of non-alignment. While emphasizing the need for armed forces deployed in border areas to be well-connected with the people who live there, Modi felt satisfied over cordial relations between the troops and civilians in the border belts. In this connection he cited the example of the Kargil infiltration, about which the first information was given by a shepherd named Tashi Namgyal. Though Modi condemned Pakistan for hving launched a proxy war against India in Jammu and Kashmir he did not dish out any warning or threat to Pakistan.People had expected that Modi would dish out a final warning to Pakistan for continued support to ceasefire violations and proxy war but he preferred a measured reaction against terror. It is so because earlier the Army Chief, Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhg, had already warned Pakistan of forceful retaliation in case it did not end ceasefire violations. This way Modi seems to have kept the doors for talks and negotiations with Pakistan open. He did so because he does not believe in dishing out warnings and threats that later remain hollow. Modi is a man of action and he, reports say, is watching the situation and in case there was no decline in the rate of ceasefire violations and in ingress bids he may be forced to hit back with all force and fury at his command as Prime Minister of India. Yes, Modi is right when he is opposed to shuting the doors for the process of dialogue and it is time for Islamabad to reciprocate. |
