Imperative to teach Pak a lesson
Ceasefire violations

JAMMU, Aug 27: New Delhi did well on Tuesday by lodging a very strong protest with Islamabad over escalating ceasefire violations in the "heaviest" cross-border firing since the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The protest was lodged during the 10-minute telephonic talks between the DGMOs (Director General Military Operations) of the two countries during which "all relevant issues" were raised by the concerned New Delhi. During the talks, the Indian side reportedly raised the issue of ceasefire violations on an unprecedented scale and asked Pakistan to stop violating LOC and international border. The DGMOs, Lt Gen PR Kumar from India and Major General Amir Riaz from Pakistan, held talks on the border situation. It is important to note that there have been more than 90 ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the Line of Control and that it has also violated the ceasefire agreement as many as 25 times on the International Border(IB) during the last seven months or so. The firing from across the border and LoC has resulted in very heavy losses. Thousands of people have been uprooted because of heavy firing. A number of soldiers and jawans, besides a few civilians, including a child of six years of age, have lost their lives. The shelling has damaged the standing crops, damaged several houses and adversely affected the school, college and university-going students. The situation for the border people has become so miserable and difficult that they have been putting up in bunkers and make-shift shelters. Many of them are even without any shelter. The women-folk is the worst sufferer and the reasons for this are not difficult to understand. Such is the situation and it was the BSF Director General who on Tuesday put things in perspective as far as spurt in ceasefire violations was concerned. BSF Director General, D K Pathak made many disturbing revelations while talking to reporters in Jammu on Tuesday. He said the shelling by the Pakistani forces in the last 45 days was possibly the "heaviest" since the 1971 war. "Yes it is (the heaviest firing) for last so many years-I think may be after the 1971 war. 45 days is a very long period for this kind of thing to happen," he said. He further said: "As you are aware the firing took place for the last 45 days, to be more precise since the first incident of sniper took place on July 17 when a trooper died in the incident. It lasted for about 10 days or so. Then, there was a brief lull. This month, there was firing through out the nights and some times during day time also…The firing from across the border on all posts is going on and firing is also targeting civilian areas". He also disclosed that the BSF made all possible efforts to stop ceasefire violations and firing and tried four to five times to hold flag meetings, but the Pakistani side did not respond to it. It was clear from what he said that Pakistan would not reform itself and that it would continue its anti-India operations and add to the woes of the people living near the LoC and IB, as the internal situation in the country is highly volatile. Beleaguered Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who has lost grip over the establishment with Pakistani Army almost in full command, would surely escalate further tensions on the border. The fact of the matter is that the Army, the ISI, opposition leaders like Imran Khan and a host of religious leaders have virtually ganged up against Mian Nawaz Sharif. Sharif would try his best to surmount the serious problem he is face to face with and the surest way for him to save his chair is to escalate tensions on the LoC and IB. Now that the BSF has made it public the ground situation and what Pakistan did during the past 45 days, it is time for New Delhi to act against Pakistan in a most decisive manner and act fast so that a moral effect is produced. A strong action against Pakistan has become all the more imperative considering the fact that the assembly elections in the state are round the corner. It has become all the more imperative considering the negative attitude of Pakistan a demonstrated by it during the 30-minute flag meeting held on Wednesday. BSF spokesperson Dharmender Pareek reportedly said: "A sector commander level meeting was held in Pallanwala Sector at Akhnoor. Although, the meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere, but no particular decision was taken over the recent cease fire violations…In a thirty minute long flag meeting which started at 4 pm, the Pakistani side demanded Deputy Inspector General (DIG) level meeting…The decision in this regard will be taken by senior officials". Pakistan is a chest and bluffer. To repose faith in it would be suicidal. Hence, what is needed is a strong action against it and this is what the nation wants at the earliest.
