Frequent traffic jams pose question mark over efficacy of Traffic Police Department | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 31: Lack of appropriate laws and ineptitude of Traffic Police Department to deal with the irksome traffic jamming on city roads had put a question mark on the state government for its failure in streamlining the pathetic traffic system in summer capital. City roads which put up with the burden of thousands of vehicles in an hour had become vulnerable for accidents as the footpaths which otherwise meant for pedestrians movement had illegally been occupied by the street vendors for trade. Residents at many city areas said that the roads network in the city is below par. "Though the traffic has increased manifold but the roads remain to be same," They said the unabated encroachments on the road sides, and even the footpaths have made the things even worse. "This is only because of the government's wrong policies that city roads have worn an ugly look. Traffic jamming has become a routine in Srinagar city as the authorities have miserably failed to deal with the issue," Mohammad Illiyas Baba a city resident told Early Times. Due to the absence of any traffic regulation, unending traffic congestion occurs daily that lasts for hours. Failure of the traffic department to ensure smooth flow of traffic has evoked strong resentment from the commuters who claimed that "frequent and unending traffic jams have drastically affected our lives and business. The worst affected are the government employees and students," The menace of regular traffic jams consumes the precious time of students also. "We never reach school in time due to the frequent traffic jams", a group of students said. The problem mainly occurs near Batamaloo, Lal Chowk, Hari Singh High Street, Regal Chowk, Dalgate and TRC Crossing. Locals said that at many places the road is too narrow that also compounds the problem. They appealed the higher authorities to look into the matter and address the reservations' of the commoners. "It takes us hours to reach school due to immense traffic jams. The traffic department has failed to resolve this problem," Danish Manzoor a student of Tyndale Biscoe School told Early Times. "The traffic mess was caused as most of the Taxis particularly Sumos coming from Exhibition crossing side took u-turn near Jehangir Chowk fly-over towards Bakshi Stadium," a group of stranded commuters said. Similarly, near the tourist hub Dalgate crossing, the space reserved for parking on passengers buses, was occupied by auto-rickshaws. "This led to long traffic jams at this busy road," a commuter said. Due to shortage of manpower, traffic police heavily relies on traffic signals. "It has been observed that mostly passenger's buses and auto-rickshaws jump the signal hampering smooth flow of traffic at intersections. The Traffic department should deploy its men at intersections to take action against the traffic offenders," Tanveer Hussain Bucch said. |
