Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Sept 9: The failure of state Government to take preemtive measures to prevent vast destruction by devastating floods has been the main cause of present crisis in Kashmir.
According to sources the State Government was caught napping till floods in mighty Jehlum and its tributaries caused lot of destruction and devastation in Kashmir valley.
Sources said had the Government activated its disaster management system in time, the situation could have been prevented from taking a critical turn.
Sources said the Flood control Department has totally become defunct as it is not fully equipped to take remedial measures to prevent flood from entering the low lying areas and inundating the vast low lying area in Kashmir valley including capital city of Srinagar. Sources said Governments failure over the years to restore the flood channels in Kashmir like Nallah Maar constructed during Dogra rule to drain out the flood water to save the Srinagar city from flood furry has been one of the cause. Sources said that all the flood channels have been encroached in Kashmir over the years and the Govt has failed to restore them. This has been one of the main causes of Jehlum after not finding a passage of flowing smoothly when in furry.
Sources and experts say that to find a passage to divert the flood waters inundated low lying areas in capital city Srinagar. Moreover failure of authorities to keep a fool proof system of network in hand instead of banking on BSNL has also led to the problem and entire Kashmir valley is cut off from entire state.
The family members and relatives of the stranded people from Jammu including Govt employees, medical students are worried for their welfare as there is no communication link available.
What can be more sorry state of affairs even the Police Control Room Jammu has no access to its counterparts in Kashmir valley, sources said.
The situation is so grim that state Government has totally surrendered before the situation as no minister or officer is visible to assure the stranded people that the help was approaching.
