Hats off to Army, Airforce, Navy | Floods in Kashmir | | Neha JAMMU, Sept 9: The situation in the Valley is very critical. Bulk of the Valley is facing the fury of floods. Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, is under water. There are areas in Srinagar where the water level has risen to one to two storeys high due to the rains and where the flood affected people are crying for help. The difficulties have been further multiplied by landslides. These landslides have hampered the relief work. There is a complete breakdown of communication network. Roads are damaged. Many bridges have been damaged. Many vital institutions, including hospitals and military cantonment, are under deep water and the life has come to a grinding halt in many parts of the state. Rescue operations are in full swing with the Army, Air Force, Navy and Disaster Management Response Forces (DMRF) working round-the-clock to evacuate the trapped people and providing food, medicine, drinking water, blankets and so on them. 18000 young jawans and officers of the Army are conducting the rescue operations braving all kinds of odds. According to one report, they have evacuated more than 25,000 persons, including men, women and children, to safer places and they are leaving no stone unturned to save the other trapped persons. The fact of the matter is that soldiers are doing all that they could to save as many precious lives as possible and the people of Kashmir have been appreciating these efforts put in jointly by the Army, the Air force, the Navy, the DMRF and the Government of India. Even the Congress, which is critical of the BJP-led NDA Government, has appreciated the role of the Modi Government in the flood-ravaged areas. However, what is intriguing is the indifferent attitude of Kashmiri separatists, stone-throwers, and even of the Valley-based political class to the sufferings of the people, which are unimaginable. Geelani is nowhere on the scene, Mirwaiz is conspicuous by his absence. Yasin Malik and Shabir Shah have gone into the hibernation. Nobody knows where many mainstream Kashmiri leaders have gone. And where are the stone-pelters? It must remain a matter of shame for them that they have abandoned the suffering people. In a way, it is good that the Kashmiri separatists and others have exposed themselves by not coming forward to help the people at this critical juncture. |
