Floriculture Director's office running in rented building since 2007 | Spent Rs 25 lakh on rent but did not raise own building | | GS Asgotra JAMMU, Sept 9: Bizarre it might sound but it is true that the Floriculture department which has failed to pay regular salaries to contractual workers, has been paying a whopping amount to the tune of Rs 30,000 per month as rent of building hired to house to office of Director Floriculture, Jammu. Sources informed Early Times that office of Director Floriculture Jammu has been running from a private building in Gandhi Nagar since its establishment in year 2007 while the department has failed to locate land for building its own building. An amount of Rs 30,000 was fixed as monthly rent of building hired by department to run the office, sources said, adding that in the last around seven years, the department has so far paid nearly Rs 25 lakhs as rent. "The directorate office of Jammu was established during the tenure of former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who had also claimed to develop the Directorate's office on the pattern of directorate office Srinagar but even after lapse of seven years, all the government claims have dashed to ground and department has so far failed to identify land", an official pleading anonymity said. He said that on one hand, government has been giving step motherly treatment to Jammu region and has not been allocating sufficient funds for development of parks and other gardens, on the other, it has also turned a deaf ear to the wastage of public money in the form of rent being paid by department. "It is very ridiculous to find that the department which has no funds to pay salaries of contractual employees has funds to pay such huge rent," he added. A trade unionist, Budhi Singh retired from education department alleged that such types of practices were being done by some offices for "obvious" reasons. Director K K Sharma, when contacted said that he had demarcated land for directorate office in Green Belt Gandhi Nagar Jammu but due to objections raised by locals, the plan was shelved. "Now we have been mulling to build this directorate office at Bagh-e-Bahu where our Executive Engineer is sitting", he said, adding that the process has been started. |
