JAMMU, Sept 9: As the state grapples with the natural calamity struck through the incessant rains, landslides and flash floods, the political dispensation, both in administration and the opposition flood the media headlines with the lip-services.
However, seldom, except the few ones who dared to venture into the ground zero to reach out to the distressed masses.
Senior Congress leader, former Chief Minister and presently Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, is one such rarity among present leadership, who took a heroic plunge and hit the streets of Srinagar city to take stock of the situation without even caring for his security.
The Congress stalwart, unattended by a thick blanket of security cover of a contingent of National Security Guards (NSG) and Special Security Group (SSG) of the State, had to visit several parts of Srinagar city without any proper arrangement of safety measures.
Being a former CM of J&K and ex-Union Minister viz-a-viz LoP in Rajya Sabha, Azad, who is bracketed under Z+ Category security cover, dared to roam around in Srinagar without caring for his life in a place where terrorists still have a deep rooted presence.
Sources in Srinagar told Early Times that due to lack of co-ordination among various security agencies, Azad, who reached Srinagar today, was not provided with NSG and SSG troupe.
Sources further revealed that not only the lack of security, Azad was not even extended an official vehicle to carry out his proposed visit to review the flood situation in summer capital of the state.
"Despite absence of fool-proof security shield and an official vehicle, Azad went on to cover various inundated localities of Srinagar city in a private vehicle provided by some close associate," said sources.
The Congress stalwart, uncaring the foreseen peril in Srinagar, not waited for his official acquaintance to accompany him, reached the inundated vale and met the agonized people and gave patient audience to their grief while assuring them all possible help.
"In the name of security, only a Dy SP rank official was at his disposal… Azad went to areas where he was able to reach and consoled the grieved masses and was stuck mid-way at a relative's residence, unable even to reach his home in Hyderpora," they added.
