Floods wash away election gusto from J&K | | | Kunal Shrivatsa JAMMU, Sept 9: With rains playing havoc in J&K, the political activities at their peak before the flash floods have also received a setback as the focus of various parties including that of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), which is already in elections mode shifts towards the deluge and its aftermath. The floods have also forced Election Commission of India to withhold its announcement of schedule for elections in four states including J&K. The BJP, which is eyeing an absolute majority in the State Assembly, has set a target of 'Mission 44+' for itself and with so much hype surrounding the desired goal, several aspirants including tested leaders as well as fresh faces were making the rounds at party' state headquarters in Jammu and Central office in New Delhi. However, the flood calamity that has claimed the lives of around 200 people so far and caused immense damage has forced the BJP to stall its selection process for finalizing the candidates for the forthcoming Assembly polls. If party insiders are to be believed then the resumption of screening and selection procedure could take some more time as the BJP leadership presently is focusing only on extending a helping hand to the distressed masses. "The process of selection has been suspended for the time being…. It will take at least 15 more days to get back to the process of zeroing in on the final candidatures…No one in the top bracket of the party is holding any discussion on the prospective names… The top brass of the party is trying to reach out to the people stuck in flood waters," said sources "Right now the attention of the party High Command is just on the rescue, relief and rehabilitation of the flood affected people… In this regard, the party High Command has directed its cadre to gear up for the task….The BJP activists in general and aspirants seeking party tickets have been told to ensure timely help to the marooned people rather than canvassing for Assembly mandate." Bubbling with confidence till the time nature's fury struck the state, the contenders, however, have to go through further anxious moments as the party has decided to keep the selection process in suspended animation for the moment. The probable candidates, thus, have no other option but to wait for some more time in getting a final nod from the party leadership to contest the Assembly polls as a BJP nominee. |
