No need to panic, says administration | | | Bivek Mathur JAMMU, Sept 9: In reply to the mounting pressure from different quarters over the safety of students stranded in different parts of the valley, Divisional Commissioner, Shantmanu and IGP Rajesh Kumar today disclosed that there is no need to panic as students are safe and best efforts are being made to shift them to Jammu with the help of Army and Indian Air Force (IAF). Replying to a delegation of the parents of the stranded students led by former IGP, Kamal Saini, IGP Rajesh Kumar said that female students have been shifted to the campus of Kashmir University whereas the male students stuck in Bemina Hostel are being provided all possible help by the joint operation of Jammu and Kashmir police and 16th Corps of Indian Army. Further, he said that efforts are being made to restore the communication so that students can be contacted as BSNL and Vodafone have started their services partially and some calls have been received from the students from the locations where they have been trapped. 20 tonnes of food items, over 8 tonnes of water bottles, 5 trucks of biscuits, two trucks of bread have been arranged with the help of Railway, Jammu and Kashmir Police and others which has been stored at Technical Airport and Army as well as Jawans of JKP are trying their level best to provide these items to the needy people in the valley. To a question of former IGP, Kamal Saini about the safety of the students, Divisional Commissioner, Shantmanu and IGP, Rajesh Kumar replied that details of 242 people trapped in valley has been sent to the Core Commander of 16 corps of Indian Army and they are trying to shift majority of the students on priority with the help of Indian Air Force to Jammu but due to shortage of chopper, it is bit difficult to airlift all in a short span of time. Kamal Saini, former IGP sharing further details with media said that over 300 students are stuck in GMC&H Srinagar, Boys Hostel Bemina and NIT Hazratbal. He said parents of these students received some calls from Srinagar yesterday and majority of the students complained on telephone over weak rescue and relief efforts as according to the stranded students, no one from administration or army has reached to help them and some students have faded in these locations due to unavailability of food items and safe drinking water. |
