First national seminar organized by English department concludes at CUJ

Jammu, Sept 9: The first two days national seminar organized by the department of English, Central University of Jammu, entitled, "The Great War of 1914-Hundred Years and Beyond: Cultural and Literary Responses", concluded.
According to press release, the seminar generated considerable enthusiasm among students, scholars and teachers in Jammu and neighbouring states and a total of 35 registered participants and five national level plenary speakers shared their views.
Vice Chancellor, Prof. Devananad Padha, was the Chief Guest who reiterated the need for Indian Universities and especially Central Universities to intensify their research focus and meet up to global standards. Prof. Nandini Bhattacharya, Head of the Department, emphasized the need to uncover the narratives of Jammu and Kashmir and the Punjab principalities in times of the First World War. She also spoke of the crises of artistic representation in times of war in her welcome address. Prof. M.L.Raina, retired Professor, Department of English, Punjab University spoke of the essential disconnect between literary modernism and the war of 1914 in his erudite keynote address.
Prof. Harish Trivedi, Professor of English, Delhi University referred to Chandrakant Guleri's Hindi short story Usne Kaha Tha and ethical issues of 'love' and 'war' in literature. Prof. Pushpinder Sayal, from The University of Punjab had her deliberations on Hollywood Cinemas and War Songs.
Prof P.K. Dutta from Delhi University, presented paper on Tagore's Vision of Cosmopolis in response to the First World War. Dr. Subarna Chattarji from the Department of English, University of Delhi, spoke on technology such as photography, television, cinema as representing the First World War. The valedictory function was chaired by Prof. Deepak Raj Gupta, Head, Department of Tourism and Travel Management. Serving Major General Konsam Himalay Singh and retired Major General Govardhan Singh Jamwal graced the function and handed over the certificates to the participants.
