PREJUDICE: Rescue operations not on similar lines in Jammu, Kashmir regions | | | Kunal Shrivatsa JAMMU, Sept 12: While unprecedented floods in Kashmir Valley and several parts of Jammu province have wreaked havoc almost in equal measures, the pace and quantum of rescue operations being executed in the two regions is not on similar lines as affected people in many hilly areas of Jammu are still craving for help from the concerned quarters. Despite the fact that various far flung areas of Reasi, Udhampur, Poonch and Rajouri districts of Jammu region were severally affected by the incessant rains, however, the rescue operations are not being aggressively pursued by the state administration. The nature's fury struck the entire state but the amount of devastation in Reasi and Udhampur districts was as enormous as in Valley but the focus of the Centre as well as State government is only Kashmir as far as speedy provision of relief and rescue measures are concerned. A number of hamlets in far off places in Reasi and Udhampur districts, where hundreds of human lives got perished, thousands of livestock got killed besides scores of houses and road links got damaged due to flash floods and landslides are yet to get a helping hand from the administration. The miseries in rough terrain of Bhamag area of Reasi Assembly Constituency, which consists of 8 panchayats of Block Reasi in District Reasi and 12 panchayats of Block Pancheri in District Udhampur, is unfolding horrifying tales of miseries and mass destruction with each passing day. Up against the worst ever natural disaster in the state in more than a century, the locals of Bhamag area, while narrating their tale of woes to Early Times, said that we are facing official apathy as rescue operations in this part of the state is slow paced and unsatisfactory. "The incessant rains followed by mud slide have cut off the entire Bhamag area from Reasi and Udhampur…One can reach the interiors of Bhamag on foot only…It takes nearly 8-9 hours to reach several affected areas," said Ramesh Singh, Sarpanch Panchayat Panjar of Block Pancheri. "Saddal village in Panjar Panchayat is presenting the most terrible scenes where about 35 people have feared dead after they got stuck in a marsh created by the landslide…An entire hillock had caved-in which created the mayhem…. So far only 7-8 bodies were recovered while the rest of those killed in the tragedy are still under debris…. Someone's face is visible while others' arms were noticeable but they could not be taken out due to muddy water," he added. The story is similar in other Panchayats of Reasi Assembly constituency including Dangakote, Sarhi, Mongri and Dera Baba where the nature's fury brought massive devastation. In Dera Baba, 45 families lost everything in the flash floods as except clothes on their bodies the gushing waters washed away their dwellings, entire livestock and cultivable land. "Though we are grappling with a worst kind of natural disaster but the administration has failed miserably in dealing with the situation…The number of choppers being used to execute rescue and relief operations are not enough…More helicopters should be pressed into service to evacuate the trapped people in higher reaches of Reasi assembly segment," said Kailash Devi, Sarpanch Mongri.
