2602 houses fully damaged, 130 roads washed away, 84 bridges broken, 202 schools unsafe
Flash-floods, landslides leave Poonch in ruins

JAMMU, Sept 12: 2602 residential houses have got fully damaged, 130 roads and 84 bridges have got washed away while 202 schools have either been declared unsafe or have got fully damaged in Poonch district during the recent flash floods.
Public Health Engineering (PHE) department has also suffered immensely. 40 pumping stations have got affected due to damage of mechanical or electrical installations. 21 electric sub-stations have got damaged while 47 rising mains have got damaged partly while kilometer high tension lines of PHE special electric feeder have either damaged or washed away.
84 water supply schemes have got affected involving more than 127 water works. 3 bore wells viz. Purani Poonch, Maize Farm and Chandak have got damaged. 119 khuls of Irrigation and Flood Control Department have got completely damaged while 82 other Khuls have got affected. 11 khuls have suffered major damages with little or no chance of recovery.
148 flood protection Bundhs have got affected. This includes 8 major bundhs. 3 major bridges of Roads and Buildings Department have got washed away. These bridges are Sher-e-Kashmir, Dundak and Pamrote. 18 Bridges have got washed away in Surankote and Mandi areas while 63 others foot bridges have suffered partial damages. In most of the cases, approaches have got damaged. Because of damage to these bridges, 105 roads have got badly affected.
Under Prime Minister's Grameen Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), take off points have 3 roads which include one in Poonch and 2 Mandi have got washed away. 22 roads have got affected because of slip and surface damages. These roads are no longer covered under maintenance and hence, huge amount of funds are required for repair. 132 KV transmission line of Power Development Department (PDD) has got damaged and snapped at several places.
15 towers of PDD have got washed away or have suffered extensive damages on Draba-Madana area of Rajouri district. 33 KV line has also got damaged with 119 poles literally untraceable. 37 Kilometers of HT and 61 kilometers of LT lines have got snapped. 800 poles are required for bringing the department back on track. 26 Sub Stations have also suffered damages.
School Education Department is another one such department whose recovery of loss would take some more time. 28 Schools have suffered fully damages, 9 school buildings have been declared unsafe while 165 school building have got partially damaged. Border Roads Organization (BRO) has lost 1 kilometer stretch of road at various places between Poonch- Surankote.
A span of bridge over Drungali near Nangali Sahib has sunk while Poonch-Chakkan-Da-Bagh causeway has got washed away. The much talked about Surankote-Buffliaz Road has also sunk while there are huge landslides on BG-Poonch and DKG-Surankote Roads. Flood Protection works, Irrigation Canals and Rural Houses constructed by Rural Development Department (RDD) have got washed away. One hostel block of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) has got damaged due to land slides while other hostel block is also under the threat of collapsing. Water reservoir of JNV too has got damaged.
Poonch Development Authority (PDA) has claimed that protection work, plinth of dormitory, toilet and kitchen block of base camp for seven lakes circuit near Noori Chamb has got washed away while approach road and entrance to TRC Surankote has also damaged. 594 Pacca Houses have got fully damaged. 448 Pacca Houses have got partially damaged besides 2008 Kacha Houses fully have got damaged and 3788 Kacha houses have got partially damaged
28369 Kanals of land has got washed away. On being asked, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Poonch M.H.Malik said "We have so far restored power supply in most of the areas. Despite the damage being of alarming level, we have fully geared up the machinery. Road connectivity continues to be an issue due to damage to bridges but even then, we have made several roads operational. We are working round the clock to ensure sufferings of our people are compensated."
He further said that loss assessment is being done. After it is over, compensation and other related things would be a priority of the district administration. "We are with people and understand their sufferings. This would be over soon and Poonch would be back on rails. People are cooperating fully with the administration in this hour of crisis," added Malik.
