"Criticism has the potential of lowering morale of Jawans"
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 12: Former J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's (presently Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha) statement that rescue operations in the Valley are being conducted on selective basis favoring VIPs , influential, tourist and non-local while ignoring the locals has drawn severe criticism the former Army Commanders, strategic affairs experts and the people as a whole.
Replying to a national television on a query put forth that rescue operations are alleged to be favoring the tourists and non-locals first, Azad said that he had information about such exercise conducted through rescue operations
"I am doubtful if the Army is well versed with the geographical terrain of the Valley and which helicopter is going which way to rescue the people, but it is fact that VIPs, influential ones are being given preference while ignoring the needy ones," said Azad.
He also demeaned the Army, NDRF and CRPF 'labour in the Valley on the rescue operations saying that eighty percent of the people saved in the Valley are through the efforts of local youth only.
Azad's political ploy in the Valley to allegedly encash the 'submerged' vote bank of Congress in the Valley in the hour of national calamity, besides bringing infamy to him has also drawn great criticism pan-state.
Only two days ago Azad had hailed the Army and the Modi government, saying they did what was required to be done to rescue the flood victims and provide them relief. Today, he did a complete U-turn and accused the Army of rescuing only VIPs and leaving the poor to the care of God or anarchy. He said he was not happy with the Army as it had not done enough for the poor. It appears he, like Pakistan, Hafiz Saeed and separatists like Geelani, is not pleased with the changing attitude of Kashmiri Muslims towards the Army.
How else should interpret his attack on the Amy which is putting in all efforts to save the lives of the stranded people? It is important to note that the people of Kashmir are denouncing the state government and their representatives and hailing the army and air force as their saviour.
It appears the Congress high command had not taken kindly to what Azad had earlier said about the Army and the Modi government. The U-turn of Azad has not gone down well with. Many of them have condemned Azad, saying the unfair criticism has the potential of lowering the morale of Jawans, who are involved in the rescue operations. Such utterly provocative statements can hamper the rescue and relief operations, they said. "The Indian Army is an Army of the nation. It doesn't belong to any political party. For the Army, all are equal. It doesn't discriminate between communities," the angry former Army Commanders said while condemning Azad and others of his ilk. Some of them asked Azad to keep his mouth shut and not make any irresponsible statement. It is a matter of regret that Azad has stooped low to lower the image of the Army. Persons like Azad would be held completely responsible if the Congress performs badly in the upcoming Assembly elections and it is destined to happen.
Meanwhile, the Army and other security forces have rescued more than 1.2 lakh marooned people in the Valley and over 20,000 in various parts of Jammu province during the past few days. The rescue operations are still going on unabated and the situation in the Valley and parts of Jammu province is so grave that the rescue operations are likely to go on for many more days.
According to reports, about five to six lakh people are still to be rescued, as they are trapped at various places, which are not accessible as yet and many parts of the state still under water. The Army jawans and other security forces personnel are risking their own lives to save the marooned civilians. Even beleaguered NC leader and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has hailed the role of the Army as well as Government of India and said that the Army has done a commendable job.
