Attacks on rescue teams in J&K: Rajnath Singh refuses to comment on role of separatists | | | Early Times Report NEW DELHI, Sept 12: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today refused to comment on the possible role of Kashmiri separatists in fanning people's anger against security forces engaged in rescue and relief in Jammu & Kashmir, insisting that the Centre's energies were now totally focused on bringing succour to the flood-hit people. "We have our eyes shut to everything else...we cannot see the separatists," Singh said when asked if he saw the separatists' hand in attacks by angry locals on the Army and NDRF rescue teams. "In this time of adversity, our primary concern is to rescue and relief all those stranded on account of the floods," he told a press conference here to summarise the Home Ministry's achievements during the 100 days of Modi government. When asked for an estimate of people affected/stranded on accounts of the floods and the total houses and villages under water, Singh said a proper assessment would have to wait until the flood waters have receded. "Once the water levels come down, we can have an idea about the total areas affected in square kilometers," he said. The Home Minister recalled that an official team led by Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami was camping in J&K to oversee the massive rescue and relief efforts. "The Central government has tackled the crisis pro-actively and taken maximum possible action," he said. Singh said that apart from the Rs 1,100 crore State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) available to J&K government, the Prime Minister had, during his visit to the state recently, cleared a separate Rs 1,000-crore special package and assured the J&K government that no expense would be spared in providing rescue and relief to the flood-hit state. |
