Early Times Report

UDHAMPUR, Sept 18: Beacon, the pioneer project of the Border Road Organisation (BRO) in the state, has come under fire from people in Udhampur due to its alleged lackadaisical approach in upgrading the Udhampur-Pathankot Dhar road and for failing to improve the condition of the stretch from Darsu to Battal Morh in Majalta tehsil of the district.
The situation has further worsened after fresh spell of rains, which lashed majority parts of entire state .Nearly 150km Udhampur-Pathankot Dhar road, which is the lifeline of people living along the highway from Udhampur to Pathankot is in a dilapidated condition due to which there is always an apprehension of accidents. For the past more than 10 years, no premixing or metalling has been done on the damaged part of the road, due to which it is posing a threat to commuters. Besides Pathankot, the road is the only link to Ramnagar, Majalta, Samba and Kathua district. There have been several fatal accidents on the road, apart from disruption in traffic movement due to bottlenecks. Owing to the dilapidated condition of the road, several people have been killed in mishaps and scores have been injured.According to advocate Amit Sharma BJP leader from Manwal the Dhar road, which connects Ramnagar, Manwal, Majalta, Mansar, Samba and Pathankot and many other areas with Udhampur, is in pathetic condition. Despite numerous representations to the district administration and Beacon agency, they have failed to do anything to improve the condition of the road, they claimed. He alleged that after the heavy rainfall road was blocked at several points from Udhampur to Majalta due to landslides. He added that it is amazing that more than two weeks has been passed but beacon has failed to clear big boulders and huge muck at the site damaged by landslides due to which there is every apprehension of road accidents at several points on road . People are facing great inconvenience due to potholes and several car drivers have complained of backache while commuting on the road. Locals say after their efforts, black topping was done upto Manwal after that no work was done on the rest of the road. They have threatened to launch an agitation if blacktopping of the Dhar road was not done soon and debris were not cleared.
