Anantnag, Oct 1: The Gandhi family left flood victims of Dehruna village of this southern district dejected as the mother-son couldn't afford to offer them except mere lip service.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi and his son and the Vice President of the Party Rahul Gandhi along with party senior leaders including Cabinet Ministers Ghulam Ahmad Mir and Peerzada Mohammad Syed yesterday visited the village where devastating floods have left 20 families homeless and washed away hundreds of Kanals of paddy land.
Flood affected villagers who according to eyewitness where eagerly waiting for congress stalwarts since the morning were expecting sound help from them as the homeless villagers fear tough days because of the arriving winter season.
"Flood victims were waiting and expecting financial help from the congress as the party is partner to state government and national level party having enough resources" said, an official who was accompanying the congress leaders.
He said that flood victims have received relief from several organizations and NGO's but the burning issue is permanent rehabilitation of flood victims before the onset of winter. Flood victims told Early Times that they turned up in the morning as they were told that the congress stalwarts will provide cheques to us, however they just assured and distributed some eatables victims which we have received from other NGO' s and organizations.
Eye witness said occasion was mostly graced by Congress workers and it looked more of a party convention while the flood victims who were expecting major relief and rehabilitation package were left high and dry.
Interestingly, visit of congress stalwarts have also irked party leaders of South Kashmir too over the selection of the village as according to them several other villages which incurred heavy losses due to floods in South Kashmir. They said that these villages could not grab the attention of congress top leaders for 'political reasons'
"We fail to understand that only why a single village was chosen and not the hundreds of villages of Kulgam, Bijbehara, Anantnag, Home Shalibugh and Devsar constituencies which were worst hit," said, a congress leader wishing anonymity.
Speaking to flood hit victims the Rahul Gandhi assured assistance from Congress. "We are with you in this hour of grief and the party will do whatever can be done," Rahul Gandhi told the people present on the occasion; however couldn't offer to them.
