srinagar, Oct 1: The Consumer and Public Affairs Department (CAPD) has set a probe into the 10,000 quintals of rice that went missing after being dispatched in 51 trucks from the godown for distribution.
According to official sources, 51 loaded trucks went missing moments after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced free ration. They said that department has no knowhow about the vehicles. A probe has been ordered.
They said that truck drivers of the department in league with the officials have dumped ration at a time when the city was facing shortage of rice, however senior officials of the department maintain that people looted vehicles after the Government announcement.
"Minutes after Omar Abdullah announced free ration, people thronged godowns, and captured vehicles in Chanapora and distributed the rice among the affected and non-affected areas but few miscreants have reportedly dumped the rice which forced department to a set a probe." Official wishing anonymity told Early Times.
He said that after the department initiated probe into the truck driver turned and submitted receipts which they have got from local auqaf committees which we aren't entertaining as they might be fraud. Official revealed that over 10,000 quintals loaded in 51 trucks is reportedly missing in official documents as according to departmental system none of the vehicle among them was given permission for distribution.
"We have system according to which ration is being debited to storekeeper who later distributes it among the consumers and pays back to department but none of the storekeeper has received ration as people themselves have distributed it," official said, adding Director CA&PD is probing it.
Sources said that department is facing difficult days as apart from probing the missing of 51 trucks, department hasn't yet received formal orders from Commissioner Secretary regarding the issuance of free ration for the month of October.
"Nothing is working smoothly in the department. We haven't yet received orders from the Commissioner Secretary regarding the distribution of free ration in the month of October," official added.
He further revealed that department has lost 10,000 quintals of rice and 16,000 quintals of sugar in Shaheedganj godown due to floods.
Director CA&PD, Bilal Ahmad when contacted confirmed the missing of 10,000 quintals of rice during floods and said that they were investigating it.
"We are investigating but importantly honorable High Court has took the cognizance of the incident after a group of city residents filed Public Interest Litigation (PIL)," said, Director CA&PD.
