Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 15: Jammu University administration has thrown norms to wind and has given its nod to a self styled students body JURSEA to go ahead with elections in the varsity campus on Monday.
If the elections are held the JU administration would violate the recommendations of Lyngdoh Committee which were approved by the Supreme Court and the University Council regarding holding of student bodies representative elections in the varsity.
As per the recommendations of Lyngdoh Committee the elections for the representatives of the students in the University of Jammu were to be held in 2006, but JU authorities shelved these recommendations and no polls were held in the university till date.
Pertinently, some students pursuing three year law course from the varsity had filed a petition titled Virender Singh & others V/S University of Jammu and before the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir seeking participation of PGs in the elections rather than scholars only. They (Law students) had appealed HC mentioning-"instead the election of an unregistered, fake and self styled body by name of JURSEA which even is not approved by the University of Jammu, are scheduled to be held on 17-11-2014 at 11 am by DSW wherein only the scholars have been allowed to vote or to contest for the said elections". Further they have mentioned in the petition that there are 36 departments in the University of Jammu of different disciplines and over 2000 students are pursuing their respective courses which are on the regular roll the varsity but despite the lapses of about eight years of passing of the directions by Supreme Court, no student representative body has been elected, as no election has been held by DSW in terms of said direction.
The students who have filed the petition are objecting their deprivation to cast their vote mandated by the SC in their favour and even are unable to contest the same election. Further they claimed that under the garb of said JURSEA some scholars claim to be the representative of all the students of varsity hence they filed a writ petition titled Virender Singh &Anr V/S University of Jammu & others which is fixed for its hearing on Monday i.e. Nov 17, before the High Court.
The petitioner students have challenged the notification number JU/DSW/14/6014-63 dated 07.11.2014 wherein the election of JURSEA has been scheduled to be held on 17.11.2014.
The High Court of J&K through the legal notice has warned the DSW not to conduct the elections against the Lyngdoh Committee and SC directions failing which the action on DSW's part would be treated as his personal act.
