Hepatitis-C outbreak in Kanelwan village, dozens tested positive

Anantnag, Nov 15: With the health authorities continuing to ignore the reports of Hepatitis-C epidemic in Kanelwan village of Anantnag district, eight more villagers tested positive today, putting the number up to twenty.
Locals told Early Times that despite few days before they informed the district health authorities about the outbreak but no step was taken by them to prevent the spreading of virus.
Mohammad Younis, a local whose four family members have tested positive said, "This outbreak has involved all most every family here, my father, aunt and two other families members along with others tested positive today." Younis said, adding his four other neighbors also tested positive and were treated at SKIMS. "Patients who tested positive were administered injections at SKIMS." He added.
Locals said that despite the fact that the virus has involved every facility, health authorities had not yet visited the village. "Agriculture season is at its peak, almost every villager is busy and haven't yet undergone through a proper medical test otherwise the number is alarming." They said.
"No one from the health department visited the village for knowing the exact cause of the outbreak."
Another villager, Gulzar Ahmad said. However, health officials in Anantnag told early Times a team visited the area and educated the people the people about the precautions to be taken to avoid the catching of the virus. They claimed that the situation in the area was under control. Chief Medical Officer Anantnag, DrFazilKochak was not available for a comment.
