JAMMU, Nov 19: Hosts University of Jammu (JU) men had to contain with silver medal while formidable side of Punjabi University (PU) Patiala won both men and women's titles in the All India Inter-Zonal Universities Handball Tournament concluded today with the holding of valedictory function on the JU campus, here. While PU Patiala women have defended the title trophy, the men team has emerged as new champion. "Last year, PU Patiala men had lost at the quarterfinals stages, the reason being engagements of a couple boys in the India camp," team coach, Gursharan Singh said. Earlier, JU lost to PU Patiala in an entertaining final 22-27. Likewise previous games, Rahul, Sumit (five) and Sahil Bharat (seven) were main scorers. Jagmeet Singh netted six goals from PU Patiala to remain top scorer. The third place in men's event went to Punajb University Chandigarh, who beat RTMNU Nagpur 33-27 in the hardliner. In women's section, PU Patiala defended the title outplaying Punjabi University, Patiala 28-27 in a neck to neck contest. The third place bagged by Lovely Professional University (LPU), who beat Delhi University 21-15. In the valedictory function, Principal Secretary, Planing and Development, BR Sharma was chief guest, who gave away the winners and runners-up trophies as also other individual medals and prizes. He appreciated the organizational abilities of the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education and complimented the teams for their competitive spirit. Vice Chancellor, JU, Prof. RD Sharma was all praise for the JU men team for winning the silver medal in the national championship. He laid emphasis on improvement in the existing sports infrastructure on the campus and assured all possible help. Also presenting vote of thanks, the VC appreciated the role of all those organizations and individuals in making two back to back events of national repute a success. Earlier, Director, Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, Prof. Dhian Singh Bhau welcomed the distinguished gathering at the closing function of the five-day event. |
