Two ventilators of DH Udhampur gathering dust for want of staff | | | Bijay Charak
Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 19: Notwithstanding demand for opening of more medical colleges and health institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, the existing Government Medical Colleges and their Associated Hospitals are on crutches due to acute shortage of faculty members and para-medical staff. Even health institutions in districts are in the state of paralysis because of huge number of posts lying vacant. District hospital Udha-mpur is one of the example that have exposed all the claims of government, as four months on two ventilators which were installed in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Cardiac Care Unit(CCU) are gathering dust due to shortage of doctors. Sources informed Early Times that in the year 2013 Jammu and Kashmir government sanctioned two ventilator machines for district hospital Udhampur, and installed by director of health services in August, 2014 but the required staff was not sanctioned. A doctor said the problem was similar in all districts health institution across the state, only 50 percent doctors are available in health institution. Moreover he further said that the situation vis-à-vis ventilators, which are considered as back-bone of the intensive care units and are often required, is also miserable as in Government Medical College Jammu few ventilators are under repair and other have either outlived their utility or are beyond economic repair. Likewise, in SMGS Hospital, the only ventilator is presently non-functional. "District Hospital Udhampur is catering lakhs of people in Udhampur district as well as their adjoining districts", sources said and adding that at one hand government could open more medical college across the state, but the existing health institution has crying for health faculty including doctors and para-medical. Sources further said that an endoscopy machine has been installed by state government in said hospital in 1995, after eight years of installation, it was out of order and still the machine was not repaired or replaced. When contacted Medical Superintendent Dr. Chander Prakesh accepted and said that he had informed higher authorities to sanction staff for these units. He further said that endoscopy machine was old model and their manufacturing companies have stopped to manufacturing or reparing it. |
