NC finds it difficult to sell autonomy slogan | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 19: The National Conference finds it difficult to sell the autonomy slogan to woo the voters across state especially in Kashmir valley. Autonomy was used as a rhetoric by NC for many years right from 1996 when this party won the Assembly elections with a thumping majority. The autonomy was an important slogan during those days and it was basically used to counter the azadi slogan of separatists. The NC leaders tried to emotionally blackmail the people of Valley with this slogan but when the time came to implement it , the party could not even discuss this matter with the Govt of India inspite of the fact that J&K Assembly had adopted a resolution vis a vis restoration of so called pre 1953 position in Jammu and Kashmir. National Conference even constituted a committee under the leadership of Abdul Rahim Rather to look into the autonomy issue and the said committee had prepared an autonomy document as well, but what happened to that document nobody knows. During 2008 Assembly elections also Farooq Abdullah as well as his son Omar Abdullah were continuously raising this slogan in every nook and corner of the state, but when they came to power they could not do anything. Now people are eagerly watching whether this slogan will be part of NC's manifesto or not which would be released very soon by the party. But as far as NC leaders are considered they are hardly using this slogan now because they know people are not going to vote for them by falling prey to this so called autonomy slogan. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has addressed many public rallies since last many weeks , but autonomy word was never uttered by him nor did his senior party men spoke about it. Whether this hollow slogan is going to be a part of NC's election manifesto will be seen when the party releases its manifesto in Srinagar in the upcoming days? Pertinently the party had promised to restore the autonomy in its 2008 election manifesto and this was an important election stunt of NC during that time .Having failed to fulfill this so called promise in six years, will NC again make a similar promise with people. The party had also promised to establish a Women's University in state to ensure women's empowerment, but this too turned out to be a mere hollow slogan for National Conference. |
