Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 19: It is too well known that the recent meeting between Prime Minister NarendraModi and Peoples Conference (PC) chairman Sajad Lone at 7 Race Course had not gone down well with many Kashmiri leaders, including JKPCC chief Saif-Ud-Din Soz. They had accused Sajad Lone of bartering the interests of Kashmir to fulfill his own political ambitions. Besides, certain Kashmiri commentators and critic of the BJP-led government at the centre and Sajad Lone had claimed that the meeting between the two would harm the PC, which is contesting the assembly elections in many constituencies.
Interestingly, Sajad Lone has got support for what he did from a Kashmir-watcher. This Kashmir-watcher has said: "The selective diatribe against Lone smacks of political entitlement. While actual and ideological opposition is understood and respected, motivated maneuvers are not. Was he the first Kashmiri politician to have ever met the Prime Minster of India? Or for that matter any BJP leadership? Was there not favorable anticipation before the parliament elections towards the BJP voiced by Kashmiri leadership across the board? Do not political entities across the divide in Kashmir meet various functionaries of Government of India even at times for their personal requests?" In other words, the commentator defended the meeting between Modi and Lone and accused his critics in Kashmir of being unnecessarily biased against the PC chief.
Not only this, the commentator also held the Congress directly responsible for the erosion of the so-called state's special status. The Kashmir-watcher the other day wrote thus: "The single element that seems to have thrown a spanner in the works is the BJP with its proclaimed agenda of abrogating Article 370, whether it's even technically doable is another matter. Beyond the debate that it has stirred, what seems to be missing in the entire discourse is the nuanced difference between BJP's proclamation and what the Congress party, though not espoused in so many words, has practically been implementing for over 60 years that it has directly or indirectly been part of the ruling dispensation in the state. From 1947 to 1994 alone 47 erosions had been made to the article stripping it of its autonomy and reducing it to the husk of its actual substance. In fact the article itself was a climb down from the "Instrument of Accession" which only outsourced three sectors to New Delhi and even retained the option of having a separate constitution (Clause 7) to that of India. The watered down Article 370 was substituted in its place by Congress with the active acquiescence of Sheikh Abdullah. Hence the Congress had been the primary architect of diluting Kashmir's autonomy and its special status, of course with the eager participation of local players be it the Abdullahs, or the Bakhshis".
The fact is that the Kashmir-watcher has sought to put things in perspective and tell the Kashmiri people that it was actually the Congress and the NC leaders, especially the Nehrus, the Gandhis and the Abdullahs, who consistently played foul with them. It is important to note that the outgoing Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir had also expressed identical views on the Abdullahs and charged them with playing with the sentiments of the Kashmiri Muslims to capture power and retain control over it. Of course, he was soft on the Congress for obvious reasons. It is also important to note that during the past few days many in Kashmir have come out with political essays, all critical of the NC and the Congress. Very interestingly, neither the Congress nor the NC has countered their critics in the manner it was required for the simple reason that they have no argument to defend their role in the Kashmir Valley. It seems that the critics of the NC and the Congress in Kashmir have succeeded to an extent in creating an anti-Coalition wave. That's the reason the PDP is emerging stronger in the Valley by the day and many Muslims joining the BJP pinning faith in PM Modi.
