Political intrigue of Pawar's style
11/19/2014 11:02:47 PM

The NCP supremo,Sharad Pawar, has
shown that he is a politician who is not prepared to accept playing the second fiddle to any other party. During his political career Pawar has tasted power for more years than being out of it.And the stunning victory of the BJP in the last LokSabha election has forced Pawar to lose power after the Congress, with which his NCP had forged an alliance, had to leave room for the victorious BJP.
This way Pawar had to miss his Cabinet post in the Union Council of Ministers. Not only this the Congress and the NCP lost power in Maharashtra where the BJP had emerged as the largest single party in the 288-member House during the recent Assembly election. In the just ended Assembly election the BJP had won 122 seats followed by Shiva Sena with 63,Congress with 42 and NCP with 41.This way the BJP had mauled the Congress and the NCP because the two together had bagged 83 seats.
And right from day one the NCP had announced to support the BJP Government. It did do so indirectly when the Chief Minister, Devender Fadnavis, mooted a vote of confidence in the Assembly. The motion was adopted by a voice vote which attracted sharp reaction from the Shiv Sena, one time in alliance with the BJP. The two had drifted over seat sharing. The BJP decided to go alone when Shiv Sena had decided to give 119 seats to the BJP to contest against 169 by Shiv Sena. After a month of friendly overtures during which it offered unsolicited and unconditional support to the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Maharashtra, the Nationalist Congress Party has done a sharp volte-face with NCP chief Sharad Pawar stating that his party had not taken a contract to keep the minority BJP government in power. Stating that Maharashtra's present political clime was highly unstable, Pawar said the State might have to go to polls any moment."It is not up to the NCP to guarantee the survival of the BJP in the State. We have to be prepared for snap polls," Pawar has conveyed this to party workers workers at a two-day 'Chintan Baithak' (introspection meet) to analyse his party's unceremonious rout in the recently concluded Assembly polls. The NCP only managed to win 41 seats, down 21 from its 2009 tally of 62 seats.
Though one does expect intrigues and mischief in politics one may not relish the way Pawar first supported the BJP in its first t rial of strength on the floor of the Assembly and later decided to dump it.Is it Pawar style for extracting many concessions from the BJP Government ? Or is it sheer political intrigue to dump the BJP simply to secure support from those sections of voters who claim to be supporters of secular parties ? Possibly Pawar's decision is based on political intrigue.Initially his party announced unconditional support to the BJP which encouraged the latter to avoid begging for a post-poll alliance with the Shiv Sena. Once Pawar felt that NCP's support to the BJP had further widened the wedge between the BJP and Shiv Sena Pawar played his cards so nicely that three alternatives were left open for the BJP.First,it has to get prepared to grant various concessions to the NCP for securing its support. Secondly,it may have to revive its efforts for mending fences with Shiv Sena.Thirdly,if the two options fail the BJP has to get ready for fresh elections.
Instead of helping the BJP in reaching the shore Pawar's NCP has left the BJP in the middle of the lake to get drowned.
The BJP needs the support of 22 MLAs and one may not rule out the possibility of horse trading being resorted to by the BJP to enable it to complete its five-year term. If fresh Assembly election is held in Maharashtra voters may teach Pawar and his party a bitter lesson because people will have to face a lot of inconvenience in facing an election within a span of couple of months.
