Merry for students as schools in Kashmir function for not more than 110 days | | | Mudasir Tariq Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 19: Even though successive governments in state have been claiming to improve the education system, the ground reality depicts a quite different tale. The system is at a receiving end. Among various reasons of slackness, one of the reasons is that schools in Kashmir are reportedly providing lesser days of work thus affecting the education quality. Over the years the authorities have altogether failed to deliver sufficient number of work days to the students which is said to be the cause of poor education among the students of the state. According to the National Curricular Framework (2005) every school has to provide 220 school days and 180 instructional days to every child in a year, while in Kashmir the scheme is nowhere functional. Here the authorities provide just 100 to 110 school days to every child. "The education system is the backbone of every society. A fiasco education system is a failure of the society. We provide lesser number of work days to our students and they have little time to complete the syllabus in this short span of time, thus snowballing tremendous load on them," said Syed Bashir Rizwi, an educationist. "How can we Implement Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation Scheme (CCE) in 100 to 110 school days in Kashmir, Every parent and educator needs to ask this question to the authorities and policy makers," he added.Months' long winter vacations coupled by unnecessary holidays, hartals and politicized education system is said to be responsible for the loss of precious time of the year. Unsystematic approach on part of the government has also resulted in the faulty scenario of the education. "The winter vacations are in tune with the ministers and bureaucrats, who want their families and children to live with them, they get tuitions there. What about the poor students of valley, their education is in peril," said GowharNabi, a high school student. While the government comes up with new schools every now and then, these schools are reportedly provided with qualified staff, the results are still unattractive. Till now several committees were brought to find out the loopholes in the education system, nothing has been achieved so for. Experts held that the education sector of the state is in a grim state due to the corruption from bottom to the top. "Education here is suffering from the disease of corruption. There have been numerous instances of corruption in the department. There has been embezzlement of funds worth crores of rupees in schemes like SSA, RMSA and ministers and bureaucrats have been involved in such scams, unless and until we don't change the whole set up, nothing can be achieved," said Gulshan Abbas, a professor of Sociology. |
