SRINAGAR, Nov 19: The decision of the state government to keep the schools open up to the 8th of the December has drawn flak from the parents as there are no heating arrangements in the classrooms. The winter has taken a firm grip on the valley much earlier this year as the night temperature has gone sub-zero giving very painful moments to the students.
The parents say that there are reasons to be concerned because the government has decided to keep the schools open till 8th of the next month without taking into consideration the impact of the flood followed by the chilling cold, hindering the movement of the grownups not to talk about the fragile dolls.
"The morning hours in the valley are horrible in the winter and my children wait for the school bus trembling with the cold.
The morning cold sends shivers down my spine and what shivers me more is when I see my children struggling in the cold and it is the time when I curse the government," said Saleema from Hyderpora. Saleema said that there is no heating arrangement even in the leading private schools of the valley not to think about the government schools which lag behind in every area. The children, as per Saleema are reluctant to go to the school on account of the harsh environmental factor. These parents want to know that on what basis has the government decided to keep the schools open in the chilling cold that too when it has been made public by the authorities that the term 2nd examinations will be conducted in March 2015. These parents say that the ministers and the bureaucrats have flown to the warm zones and have let the children of the poor to suffer."What I see these days is that there are more teachers than the students in the government school in our village and the situation is same in the schools of the other villages too. There is a general perception among the people that this order does not apply to the government schools because most of the government schools have no or negligible attendance of the students," said Fayaz Ahmad from Dharmunah, Budgam.
The parents are of the opinion that flood that the struck the valley in September has rendered the schools unhygienic and unsafe. Secondly the government decided to defer the term 2 examination by six months and most importantly the assembly elections are round the corner for which employees mostly from the education department are being given training to be engaged in the election related duties. In this context the parents ask that is it wise to keep the schools open?
