NEW DELHI, Dec 5: Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya today appealed to trade unions to desist from protests against proposed labour reforms and assured them that the government will soon call a tripartite meeting to discuss their issues.
"I appeal to trade unions that government has been deliberating on their 12-point memorandum and some solution can be found. They have gone on strike I am feeling bad about it. I am very worried," the minister told reporters here.
The minister said that he would soon call a tripartite meeting with trade unions and discuss the issues.
"It is their right to protest and go on strike. But I think we can find solutions to the issues with discussion."
All central trade unions, including RSS-affiliated Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), observed nationwide protests today against proposed labour reforms and the Narendra Modi government's initiative to disinvest public sector enterprises.
The minister said that he had met with representatives of trade unions some time back and discussed their demands and promised that some solution would be found.
Asked about the veracity of unions' claims that proposed labour reforms are anti-worker, he said, "It is absolutely wrong. It is their misconception. I am Labour Minister. It is my duty to protect the interest of the workers. All the acts done in Parliament are in the interest of the workers."
Elaborating further he said, "The campaign is going on that the government is in favour of employer. This is a misinformation campaign which is going on. Once the workers are benefited, this misconception will get away."
The minister also talked about various initiative by the government to improve skills and facilities for the workers in the country which includes modernisation of employment exchanges, enhanced facilities for apprentices and skill development of workers to improve their potential.
The unions are also opposing disinvestment of public sector undertakings (PSUs), and FDI in defence production, railways and insurance.
Modi had earlier unveiled a string of labour reforms, including measures to end 'inspector raj', asserting that ease of doing business is "essential" to ensure that 'Make-in-India' campaign is successful.
Left parties have already slammed the reform measures, saying the Modi government would continue to serve the interests of employers in the name of labour reforms.
