Fear of BJP, Kashmiri Hindu migrant voters | High poll in Valley | | Masood Malik Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 5: There was a very high voter turnout in the Valley in the first two phases of election. Why did the Kashmiri Muslim voters vote this time in very large numbers? What motivated or forced them to exercise their right to franchise on an unprecedented scale? Did they vote for a change or vote for the BJP? The PDP has said that Kashmiri voters voted in large numbers to dislodge the corrupt, callous and irresponsible NC-Congress coalition government. The Congress has said that the people came out in large numbers in favour of its candidates and against the NC and other parties. The NC has welcomed the high voter turnout and said they voted for it as well as for democracy. The BJP has hailed the high voter turnout and expressed hope that the vote was for a change and the BJP would create a history in Kashmir in these assembly elections. The BJP has also said that the high poll in the Valley was a defeat of Kashmiri separatists. The fact of the matter is that all the political parties have said what suited them and there was nothing abnormal in what they have said while reflecting on the high voter turnout. However, what some Kashmiri voters said about the high poll was more significant. What they said appeared to be correct. A reference to just one statement made by a student of Kashmir University in this regard would be enough to know why the Kashmiri Muslims voted in large numbers both in the first and second phase of election. Bilal Ahmad, a research scholar in the Kashmir University has said that he would vote to make sure that BJP doesn't come to power in the state. "I've never cast a vote before, but this time I will. I don't want BJP to form government in the state. Just before this election a large number of migrant Pandits have flocked in the valley, who are obviously going to vote for BJP. So, to negate the influence of Pandits I'll go out and vote for any local party. If BJP manages to win, they won't only deprive the Kashmiri people of their freedom but would base itself on the exploitation of the masses, and would ruin Kashmir economically, culturally and spiritually," he was quoted as saying. Even Geelani had expressed the view that poll boycott would be against Kashmiri Muslims. So, the truth is that the people of Kashmir are taking part in the election not to vote for the BJP but to ensure that it doesn't open its account in the Valley. Ironically, however, the BJP leadership is not willing to accept this reality. On the other hand, it is making statements which are alienating many Jammu people from this party. It is not wrong when people in Jammu say that the "BJP is in a self-destruction mode" and that "while it will not win a single seat in Kashmir, it will lose many in Jammu". |
