Jammu, Dec 5: The collusion of rice mill owners of Jammu region at the time of harvesting of Basmati crop has reportedly been responsible for plummeting of price of Basmati, which has witnessed nearly 50 percent decline, leaving farmers in complete distress.
Moreover, on one hand as usual no minimum support price of Basmati paddy has been fixed by state government while on the other no action has been taken by government to break the nexus of Rice Mill owners, who have not been purchasing paddy, compelling the gullible farmers to store produce at their homes.
Sources informed Early Times that, last year the price of famous basmati rice 370 and Basmati quality-1121 was Rs 7000 and Rs. 4200 per quintals during peak season but this year the cost of both the qualities has been stood Rs 3600 and Rs 2400, which is almost fifty percent less as compared to last year.
A basmati grower of Kathua, Sushil Singh, who had sown paddy in several hectares, informed that previous year the price of Basmati 1121 was quite high but this year it has not even reached to last year price, compelling farmers to store the same with them.
"In such low price, we will not even able to recollect expenditure", he said.
Another farmer of RS Pura, Mandev Raj said, "The Union government always cheated farmers. During last year, when the inflation rate was high, and to increase the value of rupee against dollar, government had allowed export of Basmati but this year there is no news about export".
He further alleged that with each passing day the cost of fertilizer, seeds and pesticides has been recording increase but the cost of produce of farmers remained at low. "In the last three months the farmers of border area of RS Pura had faced devastation three times- one was flood, wind storm and now less price of Basmati", he rued.
Pertinently, the former's populations of Jammu province who have been settles near the International Border which spread from Tehsil Hiranagar to Chammb sector and district Kathua have been producing both the basmati i.e R S Pura basmati and basmati (1121).
When this correspondent contacted Director Agriculture, he was not available for comments.
