| AMU following HC order on Library access to UG Girls: Parliament told | | | Agencies
New Delhi, Dec 8: Undergraduate girl students of AMU's Women's College have started getting access to the varsity's central library, Parliament was today told. "AMU has informed that in compliance with the Allahabad High Court ruling... Girls of Women's College can now have access to Maulana Azad Library from 8 A.M. To 11 A.M. Every Sunday commencing from December 7," said HRD Minister Smriti Irani. In a written reply, she also denied that the Vice Chancellor had given any order that women undergraduate students would not be allowed access to the main library. "AMU has clarified that that there is no restriction on entry to the library of girls studying at AMU's main campus. Only girls of Women's College, which is located 3-km away were not given membership of the library for various reasons," she said. She was responding to a question as to whether the VC had recently ordered that the women undergraduate students would not be given access to the library.
AMU VC Zameer Uddin Shah had triggered a controversy last month over not allowing women undergraduates access to the main library, saying there would be "four times more boys in the library if the girls were permitted".
The comments had drawn flak in various quarters, with Irani terming it an "insult to daughters". |
